9th installment of the series - Meg

When and Where?

So it is pretty obvious Hercules is based on the ancient Greek myth of Heracles, however as I already stressed in my “More than Myths” stamp – Greek Mythology does not equal Greek History. So there is no definite time period in which Greek Mythology takes place. Some people prefer to place it into early Greek Culture, like Minoan, or Mycenaean based on the likely dates of its origin. But I opted for the classical era (5th/4th century BC), because that is the time the Disney Movie obviously drew the most influence of.

Commentary

So here is Meg as a Greek Hoplite. She is wearing a Corinthian Helmet, which is THE most famous feature of a Greek soldier, and also an attribute of both real historical figures like Pericles as well as the goddess of Wisdom and War Athena. The armor she is wearing is called a “Linothorax” made of linen. The most important feature of a Hoplite equipment however was the shield “hoplon” after which this type of soldier was named in the first place. It was round with sharp edges and symbolized the pride and honor of the carrier. So losing it in battle was a great shame – the saying among the Hoplites was that they come back either with their shields or on them. The symbol on the shield is an image often used on the coins of Thebes, were the Disney movie takes place.
