The Rescue of Celebrian

'In 2509 Celebrían wife of Elrond was journeying to Lórien when she was waylaid in the Redhorn Pass, and her escort being scattered by the sudden assault of the Orcs, she was seized and carried off. She was pursued and rescued by Elladan and Elrohir, but not before she had suffered torment and had received a poison wound.'

Elladan: Mother!

Elrohir: Father can help her!

(oh how was Elrohir wrong...)

This scene is heartbreaking, although I admit, I've always been curious about Celebrian's abduction. Tolkien's description is rather sparse...not that I would want to know the details of her torture. Either way, it is painful to see such a strong elleth in a situation that will ultimately separate her from her family.

Also, I agree with what the others have said. Celebrian really does resemble her mother. Her appearance, I think, is quite fitting, making this is a fantastic illustration. :)

Sincere apologies for the late reply, and happy 2015 to you!

Again thanks so much for the comment. Sometime I like that Tolkien doesn't reveal much about a certain scene, since it allows the imagination to run wild. It's also a talent of his to be economical with his words in this respect, although the classic counter-argument is that his descriptions of scenery are too long-winded ;).

Anyway, I'm really pleased you approve of Celebrian's look here - her jaw is fairly strong for a female, but I always pictured her as being quite strong in a 'mannish' sort of way, and the resemblance to her mother must be an aspect to my thought - so its nice when someone concurs with this! Others are not always so approving.

No need to apologize! A reply isn't necessary. I just wanted you to know that I really admire your particular take on Tolkien's universe. Again, great job!

And yet such praise deserves a reply, if only to let you know how much I appreciate it :)

You're most welcome!

This must have been terrible for Elladan and Elrohir, joy at finding their mother yet furious at the state she's in and nervousness because of the orcs. I like how you have captured that all here, especially in the right twin's glance behind, showing that the threat's not over, they still have to fight their way out. And I like the cloaks. Those cloaks are awesome. :D

Again, thank you. I'm glad you picked up on all these emotions, as this is indeed what I attempted to portray. The cloaks are important for this too ;)!

You're welcome, and yes, once more, those cloaks are gorgeous!

This is much better than that other version of this that I was once was tricked into finding.

Cryptic ;) *apologies for the belated response*

The only problem I have with this picture is that Celebrían's jawline is a bit...strong. Too strong for a woman, if you understand my meaning.

That said, this is an overall gorgeous picture and thank you for being one of the few artists I've seen so far to post work of her during her torment. <3

Thank you for the comment, and it is fair of you to say about Celebrian's jawline; it has been mentioned by another commenter on another website. In my defence, I think when I painted this a few years ago I was thinking of the fact that Celebrian's mother, Galadriel, in her youth was known as 'Man Maiden' and 'Noble Maiden', so I wanted to suggest that her daughter may too have inherited these traits.
Woot! This is totally awesome! That tidbit in the appendixes always intrigued me, and I have always felt it rather neglected. Lovely work!

Wow. I have never seen a picture illustrated as you have made it. It's so deep, filled with emotion. Celebrian, fatigued and tortured, seems as if she is *just* recognizing her sons (I'm naming the one in front of her Elladan). Elrohir is looking back at the slain orcs, and something about his look, the narrowed eye, makes me see the pure hatred for the creatures that made his mother suffer so. This is truly an amazing picture; it even draws an on-looker in and makes them experience everything the characters are feeling. :+fav:  :worship:

I haven't seen this one before. It's so sad, because Celebrían looks so exhausted, & the way the one son has his hands on her shoulders, it's almost as if to say, "It's ok, Nana, it's ok," even though it won't be in the end.

...Stupid orcs.

I love the way you have portrayed Celebrian. I'm sick of seeing her as this really gorgeous young elf. She looks much more motherly in this.
