Description
Pictober 28 - A cycle of bridges.
PictoberChallenge - Cycle
There has been an active railroad bridge across the Upper Falls on the Genesee River in Letchworth for close to 200 years. The first, built in 1851 and destroyed by fire in 1875 was way before my time. The photograph at center is from an old newspaper.
As Wikipedia notes, "Immediately after the fire, officials of the Erie Railroad Company moved quickly to replace the wooden bridge with one built of iron. Construction began on June 8, 1875, and the bridge opened for traffic on July 31, 1875. The bridge was 820 feet (250 m) long and 240 feet (73 m) high. This bridge was used until December 10, 2017." Given that the railroad already had everything ready to go for the new bridge, arson has long been suspected in the convenient removal of the wooden bridge.
The photographs of the iron trestle and its beautiful replacement are mine. Letchworth has been my happy place for many decades.
