oil on panel, 18 x 24 inches, from my Mensur series.. based on the German Sabre tradition of dueling until one duelist receives a noble scar. Then they all go off and have a drink. Wounds are stitched right there. It still goes on today, apparently. A mask is worn to protect the eyes, nose and neck only. It can be quite a bloody event.

beautifully done! the Mensur is done by the Burschenschaft (the fellowship?). fascinating, though rather secretive group who have been given some bad press as being right wing fascists even though the burschenschaft was around before the Nazi era. All the boys I have ever met have been extremely chivalrous.
