I Only Come to This Planet for the Wine by PaulHanley I Only Come to This Planet for the Wine by PaulHanley
A little sidestep in my Doctors & Companions series, here's the original Ninth Doctor (Richard E. Grant) and the rest of his TARDIS crew- best known for the 2003 animated adventure "The Scream of the Shalka".

The 9th if the great Time War didn't happen...

Always nice to see this incarnation acknowledged!

I've just adopted as headcanon that, if not for the Time War (& the directed regeneration on Karn), that the Shalka Doctor would be the 'natural' regeneration for the Eighth Doctor.

It even works on a meta level - the Shalka Doctor's adventures were cut short due to the 2005 revival (and the Time War as its backstory - of course the War Doctor didn't technically exist then, but that's time travel for you). He was paradoxed out of existence!

Totally!  That's my headcanon too (and I think the one a lot of other people use).  I think of him as being just as "real" as a lot of other things that appeared on the TV show and were later rewritten out of time.  And hey, he got an official BBC DVD release, long after he was supposed to "not count anymore"- that's gotta make him the most canonical of the non-canon Doctors. :D

It'd be brilliant if they did some TURN LEFT type story one day where the Time War briefly gets averted and the current Doctor's temporarily replaced by Grant.  And then if they wanted to be *really* sneaky and engage in some dirty pool with the hardcore fans... it just turns out to be a ruse by the Great Intelligence posing as the Doctor. ;)

He's technically not the original Ninth Doctor, that honour goes to Rowan Atkinson in the 1999 Comic Relief Special "The Curse of Fatal Death"

Well, if you want to get *technical*, the original Ninth Doctor is William Hartnell, since the "Morbius Doctors" are, of course, 100% canonical.  Rowan Atkinson is the 17th, 18th, 18.5th, 19th, 19.5th, 20th or 21st... depending on if/ how you count Seven Keys to Doomsday, the Watcher, the Valeyard, the Lenny Henry Doctor, and whether or not Jim Broadbent counts twice.

(Am I trolling?  Very possibly.) ;)

He is the doctor that never was, and yet, could have been...

I'd be really fascinated if they "canonised" this incarnation somehow. I always thought it would be a cool idea if the Doctor ended up crossing into alternate timelines where things go a little different after the tv movie (like him regeneration into this incarnation instead of the war doctor) or maybe even meet his human counterpart "Dr. Who" from the dalek films

I have yet to see Scream of the Shalka (however I do know a bit about the characters) but this looks amazing!  :D   I really like Allison's outfit and the Doctor's pose.

I am so glad that this picture exists. This Doctor is so fantastic looking and I love seeing some love for the Master and my GOD that TARDIS is the most beautiful thing. 10/10 as usual, I love it.

I have yet to see this version, but clearly I should... Now I'm also curious to see more of this console room and think about how it might have influenced the 2005 design. Neat!

Fantastic work.
I loved Scream of the Shalka when it first launched, watching the first episode (which was originally split into multiple parts).
The TARDIS and the console was what held the most promise and imagination for me, along with the whole mobile phone = part of the TARDIS trick.
Pity we never got to see the Zeppelin hanger.
