Lately the top comment around here is the paradoxical "Why did you disable comments?".  Just so I don't have to keep answering that every time, I'm doing this journal entry to link for people in the future (and sorry for the 98% of my followers here who don't care and found this cluttering up their notifications).

It's a lot of reasons.  After 10 or so years of posting fan art online, the end is approaching.  I'm getting near the end of a number of very big projects (like the Doctor/ Companions pics), and in increasing need of more time for making "day job" artwork.  Lately managing time is a giant problem in my life, and I would have hung up the fan art altogether a couple years ago if it weren't for my backers on Patreon.  But even with that, the fan art's on "life support", and long term it'll eventually be... mostly... over with.  I may do the odd post for fun every 3 or 4 months, but it won't be anything like it was.  Eventually this'll be a place for original work (which I suspect sounds about as welcome to most of my followers as Dee-Dee Ramone announcing his rap career, but it is what it is).   So the focus with the fan art now is getting those long-term projects done as fast as my Patreon backers fund them.  That means I have to get more efficient, and a thing that can be a huge time-sucker is the comments section here.  Some people leave rrrrrrrrrealllly long fan theories under my pics, and while they're often really damned interesting and fun to read, I feel like a heel if I don't take the time to engage and answer back- so I'm turning 'em off so I don't waste anyone's time.  Honestly... I can barely find the time to read them sometimes.  And that's not fair to you.

Another huge one is that a LOT of what gets brought to my door is negativity about whatever the subject matter is.  Look... if it's something I wrote or personally created, I care and I'm interested in hearing you out.  But if you just wanna gripe about how much you hate the new TARDIS/ Doctor/ costume/ showrunner/ companion/ Shin Godzilla suit design/ Twin Peaks Season 3/ how the War Doctor screwed up the numbering/ etc... I can't help ya, man.  I'm not the Controller of the BBC and can do diddly/ squat to fix it.  Besides, I'm not really that interested in hearing other people's negative opinions about the stuff I watch/ do art of mainly to relax. While I love stuff like Doctor Who... to me, at the end of the day... it's light entertainment.  If I ever get to make it in an official capacity for Titan Comics or something like that, it'll be a serious thing and I'll be more curious to know what other people think.  Otherwise... it's pizza.  It's something to be consumed that ranges from awesome to decent (and very hard to make outright inedible... even with the odd "Fear Her" or "Sleep No More").  If you don't like your pizza, that's cool- but take it to the chef, okay?  I'm trying to enjoy mine and get on with the day.

Conversely... there are people who come here to say nice stuff about the art.  And that's great.  I love ya, and thank you.   But a fave (or even just a view) is enough.  You're busy too- get on with your day.  I'll be fine. :)

Another recent one... and this probably applies to almost nobody who follows me... is the odd, well... "excitable" comment, which I'm sorry to say is more common on DA in the last 4 years or so.  They're rare, but every so often some person decides to start screaming the n-word in comments or go on 8-paragraph rants about socialism/ fascism/ "Comicsgate" (oh FFS), etc.  I don't have time to read your manifesto.  Sometimes they ARE something to do with me, and it's amusing (even enlightening) to read how my picture of Death's Head demonstrates I'm a misogynist/ feminist/ male-gazing/ whitewashing/ SJW or whatever (and once in a while, it's even on-point)... but mostly it's unhappy people who just feel like they need a direction to yell in.  Sometimes I'm sympathetic to their pain (often I'm not).  Sometimes I want to tell 'em to go fuck themselves.  But experience has taught me that 99/100 times on DA, talking it out online doesn't help much in either direction.

And then there's just the comments I've read too many damn times: "you forgot ___" (I didn't); "why didn't you finish that fan comic you were making for no money on that hasn't been updated since 2012?" (I love ya and love that ya loved it, but you've answered your own question and WHY MUST YOU BREAK MY HEART AGAIN); "the Doctor can't be a woman" (I'm sorry you pooped yourself when you saw the Lady Doctor, but I can't change your pants from here- ask your mom); "David Tennant is actually the 11th and 12th Doctor" (no, he's an actor and Dr. Who is a made up story and yes I spelled it that way just to send you into a blind rage).  I'm sorry folks, but I've been watching comments on here for 9 years and some'a y'all play nothing but reruns.

So as Ringo Starr would say... with Peace and Love... I'm too busy.  I know I sound like a conceited jerkass saying that, but it's true (I really am a conceited jerkass) and doing this means I can get more art out to ya.

I'll be leaving the comments on for the original work and official stuff, btw.  So hopefully I'll still see a lot of ya around there.  Peace and Love, PEACE AND LOVE.

Stop-motion movie-maker, commercial artist, and sort-of-pro comic artist. I've done official work for Godzilla and Judge Dredd (for IDW Comics), Firefly (Toy Vault Inc.) and Doctor Who (Titan Comics and the game "Doctor Who Legacy" from Tiny Rebel Games). I'm also known for work on Doctor Who sort-of spinoff character Iris Wildthyme in her various media appearances (via Obverse Books and Big Finish Productions audio dramas).

N' STUFF:
For those wondering- yes, I do some commissions from time to time- when the money and subject matter is right. I'm not one of those artists who'll draw Power Girl high-kicking Lady Death for X amount of $ (well, unless it's a VERY big X), but when it's a cool project- absolutely! I usually don't do it in a way where someone just throws an idea at me and I draw it exactly- I usually prefer to "cook up" an idea between me and the commissioner (otherwise, it's too much like "real" work). I'm willing to hear anything out, though!

Price-wise, it's all over the place. It all depends on size, complexity, effort, etc. Just keep in mind, I don't take on anything for less than $60, as it's just not worth it on a time/ money basis.

I don't do fanzines or other non-paying gigs. Sorry.

Current Residence: the outskirts of Austin, Texas (in Leatherface Country)
Favourite genre of music: Punk (up until about '84)
Favourite photographer: Berenice Abbott

You likely have better things to do than read my comments, but I must give praise for your rendition of the TVM console room.
I thought that the Silurian Control room was
outstanding, but these two pieces are beyond comparison.
I wonder what you will do next?
Thank you for sharing your art.

Hi Paul,

Don't know if your already aware of this or not, but I recognized this upload of yours near the end of an 18 minute long YouTube Video called 'Best & Worst of THE TIME WAR (Doctor Who Retrospective)' by YouTuber Samuel Davis, uploaded on Thursday just gone www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXmRes…

Yeah- I saw that, actually, but thanks for the heads-up!  It's totally fine.  I'm cool w/ fans using my stuff for reference/ non-fiction purposes, which that vid totally is.

I just wish my work was as popular with Titan Comics editors. :D

Thanks!  It's the one I've been dreading for years b/c I love that design so much and knew it was gonna be so much work (literally the biggest console room drawing to date- I had to scan the line art in in pieces and reassemble it in Photoshop).  It's all downhill from here. :D

Love your work with doctor who. Not to rush you or anything, but you forgot to do one for Sylvester McCoy and Matt Smith in their TARDIS. I am trying to add them all to my favorites.

I GREATLY appreciate the enthusiasm, but I promise ya I didn't "forget" anything.  The McCoy and Smith ones (like the Whittaker one and a couple others) are already partially completed and'll probably show up eventually, real life, time and good luck allowing.

The best way for people to speed it up is back my Patreon account, which helps compensate (some) for the time I put in on these.  (I'd add a link, but it's on hiatus till next year when I have time for it again.)
