Arianrhod on Mynydd-Yr-Eglwys

“In April 1893 the Arianrhod, with Morgan aboard, was lifted into the upper atmosphere beneath a one million cubic meter (40 million cubic foot) hydrogen balloon. After more than eleven hours, having attained an estimated altitude of 80 kms (50 miles), pyrotechnic bolts severed the cables attaching Arianrhod to the balloon envelope. Moments later the vehicle’s hybrid paraffin wax/nitrous oxide rocket motor ignited, propelling Morgan upward in a steep ballistic arc that took him briefly beyond the boundary of Earth’s atmosphere.

All but forgotten today, many people consider Morgan to be the unofficial first man in space. He is thought to have been the real-life inspiration behind both the 1950s BBC radio serial “Journey Into Space” and the Max Boyce song “The Ballad of Morgan the Moon”.
