What a beautiful shot. So it's all concept art for your personal project! It has to become a success.

From the stone in the front to those birds in the back ( that i love for their great simplicity ) absolutely great art as usual ! Do you sketch in this hard contrasts from the beginning ? Or is there some kind of pencil sketch underneath. I wondered that in many of your pictures, because I try to get much more confident and bold with plain black shapes and parts and you are a great source for learning this concepts.

Thx a lot for your nice comments! I'm not really confident with my B&W placement/handling. For this illustration, I tried something a little bit different from what I usually do. I did a small thumbnail but work and did the maximum of pencil lines on small format and did the perspective without any perspective ruler (...I work digitally). All in all, I did a pencil on small format, put some blackspot/grayspot here and there to create depth and ink using a simple brush.

I'm using Easy Paint Tool Sai V.2.

Much thanks for that detailed answer.

I guess I will try and do some more detailed thumbnails too. Sounds like a good idea to me ;) I m new to the more advanced stuff of drawing and painting so there is so much to consider and learn atm.

Have a fine day,

Great work. How did you train to be able to draw like this? did you copy from photos/models? other people's art?
PatBoutin's avatar
Thx a lot.

As I did not intend art school (...I would have like to), I self-learned to draw with artbooks (mainly composition books) and with comics from my favorite artist (...there are a lot :) ). My main motivation was to quit my (non-artistic) job and make a living from my art...

Whatever you did it worked. I guess I've been drawing as long as you have and I'm lagging behind.

When I started drawing for a living, my wife and me already had a house, 2 cars ,2 kids and all the expenses that come with these... I did not have much of a choice and I guess it was my (...stressing) responsability to be sure money come in! :)

How did you find jobs exactly? Emailing publishers / other companies (don't know for whom you work exactly)? Social media?

There was this contest from Hachette Montreal of doing a comic with 6 different stories of 6 pages. François Lapierre (colorist and writer) and me (drawing) were selected to be part of the project. The book was published by Glénat-Québec. They were then interested of doing a complete book with our characters. In the same time, Soleil offered me to do a comic on «La Geste des Chevaliers Dragons» and then on «Brogunn». After that, I was contacted (via Deviantart ) to do some storyboard on Ultimate Spiderman. And so on...

In fact, I was more than lucky and I always been contacted for jobs and never had to search for work!

I guess that's what happen when you're really good and your works show it. Thanks for answering my question.

You should see my first pages! These were a very bad rip-off between Ramos and Méglia...Let say I was very lucky to have that first contract!!!

Love everything about this. Very airy and the sense of old majesty it invokes.

Great angle to his body. Feels like he is going up the stairs. Very convincing.
