I never understood why people think war is good for the economy. All it does is kill off some of the more industrious workers, and drag the rest into some pointless conflict. Bad for you, bad for me, bad for the economy.

When people say that war is good for the economy, they just mean the rich at the top.

On an unrelated note "Left-Wing Anti-Communist" is an oxymoron.

How is left-wing anti-communist an oxymoron? I support equality, but disavow communist economic structures. I don't think a control economy benefits anyone. and George Orwell was an anti-communist and so was Bayard Rustin, Irving Howe and Max Shachtman.

You DON'T have to be a Communist. But "anti-Communist" just gives the impression that you might be right wing.

"I am not a Marxist, but I am not anti-Marxist. I am not communist, but I am not anti-communist."

- Hugo Chavez

I'm not sure where you got the idea that George Orwell was "anti-Communist" I mean he wasn't exactly Communist though.
Overlord299's avatar
He was very, very critical of any and all communist movements he came across, the man was left wing to be certain, but he was also opposed to communism, ergo, anti-communist.
DragonQuestWes's avatar
You still can't be "Anti-Communist" without coming off as rather right-wing because you have to remember during the course of history of how the US and their allies have used Al-Qaeda to hurt the Soviet Union and Socialist Afghanistan.

To call yourself "Left-Wing" and "Anti-Communist" is rather very liberal.
Overlord299's avatar
What would you propose I call myself then? Left winger who doesn't like communism? I like my version better, not as much of a mouthful.

You could just say "left-wing." But that's just me.

But the war profiteers make huge amounts on armaments, supplies, farms and mining companies make more money due to the supply and demand curve. There's quite a few ways people make profits off wars.
Overlord299's avatar
Yes that is true. but when a war that is big enough for anyone to turn a profit shows up it is almost always followed by a recession in the sector that profited due to the sudden lack of demand for the huge amount of supply. Minimal short term gain for Long term loss, doesn't seem very profitable to me.
ComradeLither's avatar
Doesn't matter to a lot of people. The war makes enough to leave them high and dry, living quite comfortably off the amount they made in the war.

I work for the mining industry and we most certainly don't profit from war. My brother works in agriculture and he doesn't profit from war. Arms dealers (of which there are few) are the only people to really turn a decent profit during war, and only when the war is very large. the most profitable time for arms dealers is peace.

Huh. Curious. I remember reading about how in the Great War supplies (bully beef and copper especially) were in such high demand that many business owners (especially ones owning those companies) usually ended up with so much profit afterwards.

Yes but when the war was over they usually (there are always exceptions) have more excess than they can sell off. which more often than not can cause serious loses. My family nearly went bankrupt after world war 1 because of that. if you invested your money ight during the war then you were fine but a lot of people didn't, to much supply not enough demand.
