it sounds like a good project, I couldn't find their page yet, but I hope it'll reappear.

stencils are such a great medium for social messages!

it's mostly a small initiative of some people, maybe a group of friends who decided one day to put love slogans on the walls of Beirut, as a change of all the hate implying political ones you find every where.

indeed, how simple and striking stencils are

what you said to Fabio is very interesting, I didn't realise that this is how your government is constructed.
I hope the project works, at least to some extent.

in Poland your faith is not written on your id (almost a surprise to be honest) but if you're baptised it's impossible to be removed from church registry, and then the church uses the fact that something like 94% of people are baptised to put pressure on government. and recently it started getting worse, some doctors have signed "a declaration of faith", which means they can refuse to help you on religious grounds, and now teachers are about to do the same (and then they'll be able to teach kids that the Earth is flat and evolution never happened). you can get sued for offending someone's religious feelings (very vague) and go to prison for a few years. :shakefish:

I understand that people feel like they need to belong to a group (or can't choose not to), but why they use that to hate each other is beyond me. I hope this new group succeeds in doing the opposite!

oh,yours is not a very good system either. and getting worse as i see.  prison!! :O
not even here you go to prison for your religion believes. but of course, you get killed every day for it :)

as i was telling the other day my best friend (Richard, who has the most intelligent and real kind of faith i know) i am not as much against faith (me, an atheist) as i am against religion. all religions, not only mine. i know first hand how destructive it can be...

oh, this group, or all other laïque group in here, much more serious ones, asking for secularism for so many years now, won't have much chances of success. not only because we're a minority (not as much as one would think, but still) but mostly because we don't have behind us all those big nations with a lot of money that the more extremist parties have.
who would care to finance an arabic party about moderation and tolerance.  it goes against all political plans for the region...

i wish i could say it will happens in 20 years or so, so at least our children or their children will enjoy it, but as i see it, all is going for the worse.

but we still have to try, don't we? at least in our small entourage, in our house, in our mind.

ha, that's the tricky part - it's not for your religious views, but for lack thereof, which may be treated as offending someone's religious feelings. the prosecutor's office has the duty to look into all cases of that, which until last year didn't even apply to crimes like rape. and usually you can offend people as much as you like, as long as they're not Catholics.

it comes from a hard-line interpretation of their religion: non-religious people, or people of different beliefs don't have a moral or ethical code (arguments like :"If they don't follow the 10 commandments, how do I know they won't kill me?")

results?
pregnant women refused prenatal screening, contraception or c-sections (because that's not foreseen in the Bible), doctors refusing painkillers (it's morally good to suffer), artists being prosecuted, exhibitions and performances called off more & more often (just something that mentions Jesus or the pope is enough), our vice-minister of justice stating that there is no such thing as a secular state (which we are by constitution)... our parliament won't sign a European treaty on stopping violence against women because the right wing see it as anti-religious and anti-family (this bit almost makes me laugh, it's so macabre). and it's getting worse, some people say we're on the verge of a form of religious war (only ideologically for now, but it's also very physical as it affects the law and healthcare). we have a deal with the Vatican that makes Church in Poland pretty much extraterritorial, including in cases of crimes committed by the priests - they come under church law first, not secular law.

and I agree, if someone wants to believe in something on their own, they can believe whatever they like, but should not be allowed to impose it upon others.

but yes, let's try, maybe the plans for both regions will change one day! we can't give up!

CURSE YOU!

PS I'm sorry for writing so much, the news coming from Poland upsets me so much I have to get it off my chest sometimes and complain to friends ;-)

No sorry needed. I know why we (you and I) talk too much on the subject . Others talk about views of the mind, about ideas and principles. We talk from the guts. We lived it, we suffered it, it made us what we are.  But it's not WHATwe are, nobody should believe that!

Thanks for telling me all that.
it reminded me of Florence... Remember how we sat on those stairs and talked about this, already?  :)

I was thinking about that conversation yesterday, actually, and felt like we were just continuing it where we stopped two years ago :-)

funny how you can see some mechanisms better from a distance sometimes, I only started seeing clearly what a crazy place I've been brought up in recently, maybe by contrast with the UK, or just my age ;-) now I'm quite happy that I was (almost) blissfully unaware as a child and in my early 20s when we had even worse right-wing governments in power. of course that's a comfortable situation compared to the experience of war, but it can make one go crazy too  sad

so let's not let them drive us crazy!

being immersed in it changes the perspective, that's sure.  but age helps too ;)

i'm hoping they don't drive me crazy now, as i don't have both advantages, and i have so many new threats to fear
to hope!
