Romans 13:1-2 by Parastos Romans 13:1-2 by Parastos

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves.

How can a Christian support Communism? Sorry for asking another question but I think Communists would try and force them to worship the state.

Communism has been vehemently opposed to Christianity since the beginning, so I would say no... However, if it ditched it's anti-Christian agenda, I suppose you can support it like any other system.

They shouldn't support Communism or sharia then cuz both those call for their extinction.

The point of the verse is that any sort of government is better than anarchy, and that the government, regardless of what it is like, tends to punish the criminals.

What about 100% Sharia law?

Again, that is not what the verse is about. It is about Christians not turning into revolutionaries; and that some law is better than absolutely no law. Even Sharia has some sort of court system.

Well America is here now so I guess that this country was founded on sin. Somehow I don't believe America is the result of sin. However submitting to government authority only works so long as that government follows God. For example is Christianity was illegal Christians don't have to follow that law. Satanism has a command to "never do anything illegal" but with that religion I feel like they are commanding it so that it doesn't look like a bad religion.

If you could compare "never do anything illegal" to "submit to authority" why is one so fake and seems wrong and more like an excuse and why does one seem to be holy?

There are a lot of things that are legal but that no good person would do, like cheating on their spouse, getting drunk, swearing, cursing etc.
Submitting to authority simply means rendering unto state what properly belongs to the state (like playing taxes and bills). There are a lot of cults that, for example, don't use personal ids, go to military or pay taxes. That is what this verse is against.

You've got good points there, and an interesting question! I'll try and answer your question first and then there's also a mini-essay afterwards that you can read if you feel like it. :)

Re your question:
"never do anything illegal": is focused on externals, on looking good and possibly on getting away with immoral things. It doesn't mention anything about not doing anything *wrong* - you can do lots of immoral things that are still technically legal!
"submit to authority": prescribes an attitude that seeks order and peace, is humble and co-operative, and is willing to set aside personal preferences for the greater good (e.g. obey the government even if inconvenient instead of disobeying and causing chaos). Basically, God is a God of order, Who creates out of chaos. He transforms chaos (the uncreated world, our sinful hearts, and the mess of history) into order. So if you want to do His will, you will end up contributing to order (in this case, obeying the government as far as possible) rather than chaos (terrorism / anarchy / murder etc).

Mini-essay:
It's like all the other commands to obey in the Bible. Like children obeying their parents, employees/slaves obeying their masters etc.: obey the authority unless it commands you to do something against the will of God, then you do what God wants you to do instead. There's a portion in Acts where Peter and John are brought before the authorities and commanded to stop talking about Jesus, and they say to the authorities, what do you think, is it better to obey men (i.e. you) or God? Early Christianity generally overthrew the worldview of the day and repeatedly disobeyed the government, but only as and when they had to. Christians throughout the ages have stood up against unjust systems, facing awful consequences in the process.

There's another verse in the Bible (Romans 12:18) that says, "If it is possibleas far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." So, obeying the authorities is not an oppressive rule, it's a command to keep order and be a good example to others. :)

One more thing - just because sin occurred in the history of a nation it doesn't mean the nation is somehow tainted forever and can never be used by God to do good. In the same way, if a nation is generally righteous and a good influence in the world, it doesn't mean that its past is sacred and that all sin in it must be explained away.

By that logic America is a country founded on sin? What in the world? I need an explanation for this one too.
