July 3, 2009, Southern Pacific 4449 launched its first leg of a 7 day journey to the mid west on July 3rd. It's route was from Portland, OR, to my current town of residence, Spokane, WA. Given a long love affair with this locomotive (that started when I was only three years old), I couldn't pass up the opportunity to foam at her.

Standing in a pullout next to I-90, we got a nice long view of 4449 passing Sprague Lake as she approached the end of the days journey. In another hour she would be in Spokane letting off her passengers.

By this point, "The Pack" had waned in size considerably, as most of the people from Spokane were waiting in Marshall Canyon, while many of the people who started in Portland nine hours earlier had peeled off to go home.

And for the most part, it wasn't drowning out the sound of the steam... for the most part. :)
