 I have some knowledge of it, but though I can recognise the odd famous phrase ('Ave atque Valis' for instance) I am not at all able to speak or to write in it - beyond the few phrases, that is.

Also I have studied Latin at school, but now I only remember some famous quotes like you :P

 It occurs to me that even if Latin is indeed a dead language, it has led a VERY active afterlife as the OTHER language of scholarship in the Western World (along with Ancient Greek).;) (Wink)
