Ceratosaurus dentisulcatus

Original artist:     TheMacronian
Original lineart:…
Colouration:         Rust

was a large predatory theropod dinosaur from the Late Jurassic Period, found in the Morrison Formation of North America, and the Lourinhã Formation of Portugal. It was characterized by large jaws with blade-like teeth, a large, blade-like horn on the snout and a pair of hornlets over the eyes. The forelimbs were powerfully built but very short. The bones of the sacrum were fused and the pelvic bones were fused together and to this structure -similar to modern birds. A row of small osteoderms was present down the middle of the back.

Artist's Note:
While I already have a Ceratosaurus coloured in my gallery, drawn by pilsator (found here: Ceratosaurus dentisulcatus), I couldn't pass up the opportunity to colour this lineart by TheMacronian. Both are absolutely beautiful, but I tried to emphasise the rough texture and scales in this particular peice, while the other has more smooth skin. Both of my coloured Ceratosaurs are orange, but that shade just looks so wonderful on this animal I have a hard time painting it anything else!

Here are some other versions that I coloured:…
Both TheMacronian and I thought this version looked best to upload officially. I hope you enjoy!

Alrighty I've got another question?! lol The defined scales on the body, are you drawing these out individually and changing the opacity of the layer?

Hi benners2004,

Usually when I colour in scales I will simply take a spotty-looking brush and paint over the body, making the brush larger or smaller depending on the area on the body.
There are lots of free textured Photoshop brushes you can download here on Deviant Art, so I suggest taking a look through those.
Please let me know if you need anything else.

Thank you Paleocolour! Again I admire your work and strive every day to become better and better. I'll be looking into those brushes you're talking about, by the way I have found one of my favs you've created, the Ceratosaurus dentisulcatus with its mouth open and in the oranges. Keep up the good work I can't wait to see new ones!

You're getting better with each piece! Maybe you should consider doing texture work for games! ;)
