Description
"The master of the house was an elf-friend; one of those people whose fathers came into the strange stories before the beginning of History, the wars of the evil goblins and the elves and the first men in the North. In those days of our tale there were still some people who had both elves and heroes of the North for ancestors, and Elrond the master of the house was their chief."
- page 70 of The Hobbit (in honour of the 70th anniversary of it's publication)
On of my favourite things about The Hobbit are the glimpses of history and old tales that appear all the way though it. At first reading they probablt seem like interesting little snatches of the wide world around, and they're evn more fun once you know the stories they refer to, such as Orcrist and Glamdring being blades of Gondolin, once carried by Turgon himself! Although Tolkien probably had little idea of what that would mean at the time he wrote it.
Elrond is inspecting the swords in the picture, and around himself, Gandalf, Thorin and Bilbo, are some of the "elves and heroes" whom Elrond is descended from - Luthien, Thingol, Melian and Beren; Idril, Turgon and Tuor; and Earendil and Elwing.
