awful + stylish by paladinknight awful + stylish by paladinknight
Tribute to the lazy, grotesque and stylish colours found in the backgrounds of certain earlier anime.

Love them or hate them.. or both?

Love them!!! I've always been attracted purely to the odd/exotic nature of the 'grotesque' early anime!! XD

Ooh the greeny tones do remind me of early ninties anime. I didn't watch many of them back then mainly because they shown late night and were too violent (not really my thing ^^;). Have you ever watched the Heroic Legend of Arslan? I love that OVA :D

Think I was a bit young for Channel 4's runs back then.. xD I just didn't get what was going on in half of the stuff they had aired (Tokyo Babylon, Akira--). And yeeeeess, Arslan was one of my faves from those runs! :) The anime was so political.. And had so many colourful characters. I must've had crushes on everyone eventually. 'Cept that little kid of course..

One of my other faves was Devilman!!!!! *V*

Hehe I was a little'un myself them days :XD: I didn't even know what "manga" was lol.
The character art is just beautiful in Arslan, I never thought I'd love an anime that was focussed on war and politics though. I really wish they completed the series :(
Oh dear, I watched Devilman (ova movie) after borrowing a video tape from my friend O_o; The first time I ever watched a gory anime lol. I didn't know what to make of it haha ^^;

Yes!! It was quite saddening not to journey with Arslan on anymore of his sexy adventures.. 'n' I even named some video game characters after Arfurido and Phrangesse at some point, lol. Though.. 'Manga Video' kept changing the spelling of their names- so to be honest.. I've no idea what they call 'em anymore. 'n'

hehehehe, Devilman's awesome! *v* Though I would say this, cus I do love my gore...

Hehe, no particular show. Perhaps I ought to try references for remarks further down the line, but for now I'm going on gut nostalgia. There's something 'true' in memories.

nah i dont tihnk you have to refrence, but yeah it realy feels reminisant to sometihng ive seen before? =') it's very comforting <)) there is somethin' very true in memories, and prehaps because memories get clouded with emotions, it's truer than the real thing <)

Old anime does have that 'swimming pool' affect with the mind, much as I love it too. =)

daring art + thrilling story
VERSUS
safe art + generic story

To be brutally honest, I find it difficult to comprehend how half of the latter ever made it to air... Don't even the most obsessed of otaku get bored?

that's a good question XD i guess its because today's stuff is all pop culture-ish with kids and music.i suppose the first half of the good times were catering toward male demographic and the current half is trying to aim for females. i think

the first part seemed like it was for kids and family from the 50's to 60's the second was for males during the 70's and mid 90's and now its moving more towards females from the mid 90's to probably 2020 or 2030 then maybe after those points they might mix it all up but that's just wishful thinking. though from what i noticed there are male fans that are into today's stuff XD

sure its not a complete and total loss but i do miss the good ol times <:3

Haha, yes. I will never forget the time I saw a middle-aged man in a book shop buy up almost the entire series of the Chobbits manga... o,o

Some time ago, I read that more females are into drawing manga than males. I wonder if this is a reflection on the type of manga which are created. I mean,, even some of those intended for a 'male audience' seem kinda girly at times..!

Haha. And yeah, glad there are still things being produced for us old fogies!! We just have to look hard.. xD

What concerns me is the growth of anime which lacks any spark/originality. I wonder if we will see the back of this era.. >,< Or if this will eventually kill off the culture.

Anyhoo- I thank you for such an interesting discussion. 'v'
