Maiden Allowance-ChurchHill Downs

Myra finished tacking up Queen and gave her a peppermint. The jockey took the reins in her hands and looked into the bay mare’s eyes. “You’ll do great.” She said. Queen shook her head and snorted as if she already knew she would win. Xaria, Queen’s trainer entered the barn. “It’s time to go. You ready?” Myra handed the reins over to Xaria and smiled. “Yeah. I’m not too nervous.” Xaria took the reins and checked Queen’s girth. “Good. Then let’s go.” When Xaria finished checking the girth, she led Queen out of the barn.

After they had walked Queen, Myra mounted the bay mare. She patted Queen’s neck, then turned to Xaria. “Same as last time. She should do great.” The trainer said. “See you at the finish line.” Myra flashed a quick smile before she was loaded into the starting gate. She took a deep breath and lowered her glasses onto her face. Myra could feel Queen’s anticipation and energy, just waiting to erupt. In a few short seconds that felt like an eternity, the metal gates swung open. Haunted Love leaped out, her long legs beating against the turf. Myra struggled to hold her in until the final turn, where she let Queen have full rein.
