STORY
"Where the turf meets the surf
Down at old Del Mar
Take a plane
Take a train
Take a car.
There is a smile on every face
And a winner in each race
Where the turf meets the surf
At Del Mar."
- Bing Crosby
The sky was gleaming as the day started to fade. There were continuous races and a seemingly unlimited amount of horses. To stand out from the other performances today a horse would need to be truly special.
The regulars had already gathered near the paddock, most of them had simply watched the previous stakes on the video board rather than take the 100 foot walk to the rail. Each of them were there for the same purpose now, to scope for which thoroughbred would make the most favorable impression. It was a G1 after all. A field of six capable colts were set to start in the Missed Fortune Stakes, any of which could develop into the next Kentucky Derby victor when May rolled around.
Five horses strolled through, one after the other; a bay, another bay, a dark bay, a gray, another dark bay. They came and went. Then there was nothing.
As fans began to stray, the six appeared. Through the tunnel emerged a chestnut. It was a colt standing only 16 hands high, but almost towering above those who surrounded him. He stomped through the walkway, rearing with each step, making sure his existence was known with the commotion. Then he halted entirely.
He scanned around, almost peering into the eyes of the humans who bordered him. It was the scene of a king in his own domain.
The saddling process came and went with little interest, at least nothing that could remotely amount to what had previously transpired. With the call to post, each horse made the trek to the track. All eyes were on that one flashy chestnut, now prancing joyfully, and rejoicing in his strength.
Federalist.
