2 distinct cultures:
Western culture: "democracy" (democracy doesn't exist) western values, individualism, capitalism
Rest: religious mysterious
High culture: fancy exclusive rich people culture difficult to understand fancy names complicated.
Low culture: poor people, pop culture easy to understand simplistic.
If something becomes mainstream when it used to be highculture, the rich and powerful abandon it and look for something else.
When something becomes prominent in low culture, it is taken by the rich and formed into high culture.
Bourdieu 5 societal tools:
Field: your social surroundings (slums vs rich suburb
Habits: which group of people you belong to (rich capitals or artisan or poor worker)
Social capital: who you know
Cultural capital: what you know
Financial capital: how much $$$ you have
Symbolic violence: shunning those who lack in cultural, social, financial capital.
