"So let me get this straight," says Carrie after Professor Kukui explained about pokemon, "this world is full of super-powered animals ranging from living rocks to dragons not to mention ghosts."
"That's right," says Kukui with a nod.
"And some people capture these animals in baseball sized and, shaped devices then use them to battle other people who also caught animals," says Carrie, "I get that right?"
"Yes, you did, just like a Swift attack you hit the mark," says Kukui.
"That is messed up, sounds like superpowered cockfighting!" exclaims Carrie.
"Cockfighting?" asks Lillie as Carrie explains the idea behind cockfighting as Lillie looks horrified at the thought.
"Pokemon battles are nothing like that," says Kukui, "they are about trainer and Pokemon working together to do their best against others."
Before Carrie can respond, there comes the sound of something happening at a path to the village, "Hala is back, the Island Kahuna has returned!" declares a man.
"Kahuna?" asks Carrie.
"The Tapu's chosen trainer," says Kukui as a heavy-set man walks up to the group wearing a yellow jacket, blue shirt, white shorts, and sandals, "how's it going Kahuna?"
"It goes okay, had to deal with a troublesome Tauros but as I came back, I thought I saw Tapu Koko flying about," says Hala as he notices Carrie, "well who do we have here?"
"This is Carrie, she just arrived in Alola today," says Kukui with a smile.
"I see," says Hala as he walks up to Carrie.
"Yeah, Tapu Koko saved her and Nebby," says Lillie as Hala is surprised.
"Tapu Koko may be the guardian deity of Melemele Island but, it can be fickle and doesn't always help those in need," says Hala, "for it to have helped a newcomer to our islands; it must sense something special about you and, I know the best way to see what it is."
"And, that is?" asks Carrie as Hala takes out three red and white balls that he tosses at the platform in the middle of the village.
"Come out my pokemon," says Hala as the balls open and a bolt of light comes out of and forms into three creatures that look very different from each other, "come, Carrie, I will let you choose your own pokemon partner!"
"What?" asks Carrie in surprise.
"Go for it Carrie, nothing wrong with making new friends," says Kukui with a smile.
"Well I guess not," says Carrie as she walks up to the pokemon and looks them over.
"Will you choose Poppolio the water type?" asks Hala as Carrie looks at a blue seal-like Pokemon with a white snout with a pink round end.
"Hmm, no sorry little guy but I don't see us really connecting," says Carrie as Poppolio looks down a bit while Carrie looks at the next pokemon.
"Will you choose Rowlet the grass type?" asks Hala as Carrie looks at the little tan spherical owl pokemon with a bowtie made of leaves.
"Hmm, no again, I've never been a fan of birds, when I was little, a bird made off with my sandwich every time my family had a picnic," states Carrie.
"Well, then it appears that your choice is Litten, the fire type," says Hala.
"Yes, it is," says Carrie as she looks at the black and red cat that looks up at Carrie with half-open yellow eyes. "Hi, little guy."
Litten mews at Carrie as Hala says, "now Litten must choose you."
Carrie walks onto the stage as Litten looks at her as everyone watches, soon Litten runs up to Carrie who picks up Litten who mews happily. "I'd say that Litten has chosen me huh?" asks Carrie with a chuckle.
"Obviously," says Hala with a laugh as he hands Carrie a Pokeball as she walks off stage with Litten on her shoulder, "here is Litten's Pokeball."
"Thank you but, I'd rather not keep Litten in here," says Carrie as she looks at the Pokeball.
"That is fine, many trainers keep their Pokemon outside of Pokeballs," says Hala.
"Yep and some trainers often give their Pokemon nicknames," says Professor Kukui as he and Lillie walk up.
"Like you know," says Carrie as she motions to Lillie's bag.
"Yes, like Nebby," says Lillie with a smile.
"You want a nickname?" asks Carrie as she looks at Litten. Litten mews and nods a yes, "okay, hmm, what to call you now, first are you a boy or girl?"
Meanwhile far away, a man in a lab coat sneezes.
Back in Alola, "Litten is a male," explains Hala.
"Okay, let's see," says Carrie as Litten jumps off of Carrie's shoulder and starts to cough, "hairball?" Litten coughs and soon hacks up a fireball, "WHOA!"
"Yep, Litten's hair is laced with oil that is then hacked up on fire," explains Kukui.
"Okay, so a cat with pyromania, hmm, that sounds good, how does Pyro sound?" asks Carrie as Litten looks up at her and mews with a smile, "okay, Pyro it is!"
"Now then," says Hala.
"Wait!" shouts a voice as everyone turns and sees a young man run up wearing a green shirt and yellow shorts.
"What is it Hau?" asks Hala as Hau walks up to Carrie.
"I want you to battle me Carrie!" exclaims Hau.
"Ah what?" asks Carrie in surprise.
"This is Hau, my grandson," says Hala.
"Yeah, so what do you say?" asks Hau.
"I don't want Pyro to get hurt," says Carrie.
"I get that but, neither of us is the kind of person to push our partners that far," says Hau with a smile.
"I don't know," says Carrie as Kukui walks up.
"How about you two battle tomorrow during the festival?" suggests Kukui.
"A festival?" asks Carrie.
"Yeah, the festival we have every year where we battle to honor Tapu Koko," says Hala, "seems like a fitting way to thank Tapu Koko for saving you and Nebby."
"Really, Tapu Koko saved you and Nebby Carrie?" asks Hau.
"Yes it did," says Carrie as she reaches into her pocket, "and it left behind this," she takes out the sparkling stone she got as Hala and Hau both looked surprised.
"Tutu isn't that?" asks Hau.
"Yes it is," says Hala, "to think that Tapu Koko not only helped you but also bestowed a sparkling stone upon you, may I perhaps borrow that stone, I will return it after your battle with Hau tomorrow I promise."
"Ah sure," says Carrie as she hands the stone to Hala, "now what?"
"Now I suggest we turn in for the night," says Kukui, "you can crash at my place, Carrie."
"Thanks, Professor," says Carrie with a smile.
"Than let's go," says Lillie as Carrie looks behind Lillie.
"Ah Lillie, Nebby is out of the bag," says Carrie.
"What?!" shouts Lillie as she turns to Nebby, "Nebby, I know Hala and Hau know about you and will keep you safe but, you need to stay in the bag!"
Nebby looks at Lillie and trills as he floats back into the bag after Lillie opened it.
"Keep a close eye on that special Pokemon Lillie," says Hala with a laugh.
"I will Kahuna Hala if he ever stays in the bag," says Lillie as everyone joins Hala in laughing.
"Oh before I forget," says Kukui as he hands Carrie an oddly shaped red device with a screen, "here's a Pokedex for you."
"Pokedex?" asks Carrie.
"Yep, the Pokedex, this device allows you to look up data on Pokemon you encounter and, for pokemon, you catch it displays even more data," explains Kukui with a smile, "go ahead and try it on Pyro, just point the lens on the back at him."
"Okay, say cheese Pyro," says Carrie as she points the Pokedex at Pyro and Pyro's picture pops up with three blank spaces next to it, "let's see here, Litten, the Fire Cat pokemon, its coat regrows twice a year. When the time comes, Litten sets its own body on fire and burns away the old fur, Whoa!"
"Pretty cool huh?" asks Kukui with a smile.
"Yeah it is," says Carrie as she walks over to Lillie, opens her bag and points the Pokedex at Nebby but gets nothing.
"Nebby or Cosmog is a totally unknown Pokemon," says Lillie.
"Cosmog?" asks Carrie.
"Nebby' species name, it just sounded like a good name to me," says Lillie as Carrie thinks of Nebby and how it looks like a wisp of smoke and, stars.
"Yeah I can see that," says Carrie as Pyro mews and nods.
"Alright let's head to the lab for some shut-eye," says Kukui as they start to walk but, Carrie stops "something wrong Carrie?"
"Yeah, I need to show you all something," says Carrie.
"What is it?" asks Hau as he and Hala look at Carrie as does Kukui, Lillie, and Pyro.
"This," says Carrie as she stretches her arm around a bit as those gathered are shocked.
"WHOA, HOW DID YOU?!" exclaims Hau.
"I'm elastic," says Carrie as she grabs her cheek and pulls it a bit, causing it to stretch.
"I knew there was something special about you but, I had no idea," says Hala with a smirk.
"Yeah and this is why I said I know how to keep a secret Lillie," says Carrie.
"I can imagine," says Lillie in awe.
"Shouldn't you also tell Hala and Hau about where you came from?" asks Kukui.
"Oh right," says Carrie as she stops stretching and faces the two, "I'm from another world, one without Pokemon."
"That explains your reluctance to battle," says Hala.
"Yeah," says Hau with a big smile.
"So see ya tomorrow," says Carrie as she, Lillie and Professor Kukui head down a path and go by a house with for sale sign. "So Lillie, where do you stay?"
"I'm a guest of the Professor's as well," says Lillie.
"Yep, you see someone in trouble, you help them," says Kukui with a smile as the three make their way through some tall grass and soon come to a beach where Carrie sees a wooden house with several roof patches on the roof, "well here it is, my Pokemon Research Lab, where I study all kind of Pokemon moves."
"What do you mean by that exactly?" asks Carrie.
"A pokemon move is a move a Pokemon uses in a Pokemon battle or for other purposes, example, the fireball Pyro used earlier is Ember," states Lillie.
"As sure as Swift Lillie," says Kukui with a smile.
"I take it then that Swift is a good move?" asks Carrie.
Kuuki nods and says, "yep, it's a move that never misses."
"Makes perfect sense, so where shall I sleep?" asks Carrie as she looks around the lab though it's not really a lab, "also your actual lab is downstairs huh?"
"Yep, up here is the living area," says Kukui with a smile.
"Makes sense," says Carrie as the three settles in with it being decided that Carrie will sleep on the couch.
"You sure Carrie, the couch won't be as comfortable as a bed," says Lillie.
"My body is elastic remember, meaning it's very soft, so comfort is not a big issue," says Carrie with a chuckle.
"Speaking of, I hope you don't mind helping me with a bit of research, I'm a bit curious about how your body can deal with various Pokemon moves," says Kukui.
"Well Professor, attacks like Pyro's could melt me into a puddle of goo for one thing," says Carrie.
"I see, what about impact?" asks Kukui.
"Well, it varies, for example, I've been run over flat before," says Carrie.
"I see," says Kukui as he nods and points at Carrie, "then I suggest you take the Island Challenge!"
"The what?" asks Carrie in confusion.
