Alfonso, king of Castilla and León, two of the Christian kingdoms in the Iberian middle ages. He firstly got León on his father's last will, with his elder brother getting Castilla and the younger Galicia. After his brothers' demises he reunified the inheritance and ruled ably and firmly until his death. His later years were muddied by issues around succession.

I based the tunic on a peninsular cloth fragment from the 11th century, date he ruled, and which depicts eagles, suposedly his house's -Jimena- proto-heraldic device. The crown is based on both art and Ottonid jewelry, which is of an earlier date, while the belt is similar to the Norman ones. The hair and beard are intentionally long because at this date the kings liked to look Christ-like.

A most excellent illustration! (Though one suspects that Christ-like appearance may have been more cultivated than natural ... ).
