Yes and no. On the one hand, I have a fantastic family that is completely able to support me financially and has been incredibly supportive of my decision to stay in the USA (at least for now) and work in animation. I know I am good at what I do and I'm a hard worker, everyone I've worked with has had good things to say, and when I was still applying for jobs I was getting a decent callback rate. On the other, for various reasons regarding what happened with my job this year, I am unable to legally work for pay of any kind while in the USA. If I leave the country, because I don't have my new visa yet, I won't be able to come back. I stopped applying for new jobs after a couple of months because long-term artist jobs are in very short supply these days to put it mildly, and I got sick and frustrated of hearing again and again "oh we love your work, but we can't sponsor you for a visa".
I've just applied for a new kind of visa that will allow me to do freelance work, and all I have to do at this point is wait. No, I'm not struggling because I am financially secure, but yes, I am incredibly frustrated because I want to do the job I went to school for and I'm sick of feeling like a leech/money-vacuum to my parents. :\
Oh my gosh, I hear stories like that all the time. ;o; We have immigrants from Vietnam, Brazil, Jamaica and Costa Rica in our class and they tell us how difficult it is to work here and settle down here. They say that it's absolutely ridiculous to try and find a job and all that with the visas and greencards. I swear, the U.S. has some of the strictest immigration laws.
For me, we just have a few minor roadblocks here and there.
I sympathize with you guys. I really do. I mean, everything's going down the drain day by day and I have never in my life witnessed so much misfortune people have to go through. And yes, the stamp you've mentioned is actually true (I can't remember if I faved that one or not).
The sad truth is that the reason why we're in this mess is because of the fact that people left and right are not past politics. Not to mention that many pretend to be apolitical yet freak out over an alternative idea, be it left, right, center, whatever.
Thanks much. Everything is going down the drain and I have society and the govt. to blame for it. :/
That's so true. Everything is about politics these days, even as far as helping people in natural disasters! I've seen it happen here especially since all these storms hit us. Exactly. It seems almost impossible to be apolitical.
Oh man I get you about the house and the animals thing. We are in the same boat with that and I will not move without my husky and dalmatian! D:< And then we have some other situation that can spark some really bad things with certain individuals though it calmed down for a while, I'm hoping it stays like that. There are no jobs over here as well and it sucks that for a stupid position they picked the person with no financial troubles. But right now I'm going to focus on finishing my studies and see what I can do. My mum says when I finish we might all pack up and go.
And I agree about that it doesn't matter who's "worse" all troubles should be seen as that: troubles. Because what might be happening to someone that isn't "as bad as yours" could be the worst thing to happen to that person in their situation. Because lately I've noticed lots of people going "suck it up" and don't even let you express what you're feeling. For example when I went: "Someone I cared a lot about passed away..." Then they came and said: "Suck it up, it's life". People who think that saying that solves problems need to double check and realize: No shit Sherlock! Of course "it's life" but that doesn't mean we have to walk around without trying to do something about it or at least hear a friend out to make them feel better.
Exactly! And these places don't even take big dogs, so we're kinda screwed. D: And of course they pick a person with no financial troubles. They rarely hire the poor for whatever reason. It's kinda the same way at my work. I see people there who look wealthy, but looks can be deceiving.
That's right. And seriously? Somebody said "suck it up"? I'm guessing they've never lost someone before or either they really have no emotions or anything. That's a terrible thing to say to somebody!
I'm not doing terribly right now, but I am a college student which means a very limited budget and lots of loans. I'm okay right now, but in a few years it might be a different story. Since I just started I don't have a job which means no money is coming in for me to save up for future semesters. Hopefully over the summer I can pick up something decent so I can start saving money once again
The same thing happened to me when I entered school. The housing was paid for and everything, but now I'm in massive debts. It's tough, but I hope you find a job quickly after school or even sooner. ^^
I guess we all go in and out of problems. A few years ago my family and I were up to our necks on debts and whatnot, but thanks to my brothers help we were able to pay all of our debts, and Thank God my father found a job last year (after a couple of years of unnemployment).
Right now I would say I'm not exactly struggling as far as money goes. My father has a steady job, and since I still live with my parents (and I will continue to do so for a couple of years more, or until I get married, whatever happens first) I can help out with bills.
I'm sorry to hear you're in a pinch right now, but I'm sure thing will change, they always do. The only thing left is to raise your head and keep walking, time waits for no one.
I wish you the best really, I know just how expensive medication can be.
Wow, that's great news! Yeah, the same thing happened with my friend's dad. He was going in and out and getting laid off left and right, but I'm glad your dad found a job!
That's good to hear! It can be tough at times, but I'm glad you're doing well. I still live with my parents, too, but I don't feel bad because some people are in their 30s and still live with their parents!
Husband has been out of work since June, but he got on unemployment. In the meantime, I've been breaking my back at a job that doesn't have an ending hour, and the last 3 weeks have been 50+ hours. I'm exhausted, but because of both of us, we're doing fine.

HAHAHA. Moneymoneymoney. That's where just about all the problems I've heard stem from these days. While I'm just a teen and don't need to pay rent or anything, my family has a lot of quarrel and how one of my family members reacts REALLY scares me.
Our insurance is crap, we have no animals, still have internet I don't even know what my parents owe in bills but it's living paycheck to paycheck with 100s of thousands of dollars in debt. We still buy new things, we have Christmas, but it's still racking up debt.
Divorce...my parents have been married for 23 years...divorce has always come close.
As for medication...I'm happy to know I'm not the only one who's costs so much. :/ My mom makes me feel really guilty and like shit over it. And for you dicks who think people with bi-polar and Schizophrenia or whatever can just "go without it" or "get over it" really need to look up these illnesses and realize how serious saying that a person like that can go without medication is.
Sorry, rambling, but yeah, life is harsh and things suck. While some problems are legitemate we're not in a 3rd world country. A lot of people need to be thankful, but as you said, your pain isn't any less because others have it worse.
yeh nowadays everything is hard i mean even getting a job is retarded due to fact its alot less likely people hire unexperienced/no job at all exp people to work when they can get more bang for the buck. Due to this loads of people are outta jobs due to companies unable to support those people or due to replacing em for someone better for beginner pay and alot more experience. Best bet nowadays to get a job is to make your own job selling whatever tradeskill your good with on your own as you may get further with it then with no job
Unlike Charlie Sheen who is . I agree with you 100% xD
The sad part is my parents fucked their fiances up like /RIGHT/ before the recession, so we got trapped in a fucking hurricane right when the recession started. xD And everyone likes to say "YOUR IN THE BAHAMAS!11111 WHY ARE YOU WHINING!"-- buuttt, The Bahamas sucks the cock of America BIG TIME, our tourist system is the only thing we rely on (they like to say our fishing industry is a backup system but that's bullshit xD).
So when America lost money and wasn't able to go on vacations our pathetic little island just went "OH SHIT." and started flailing their arms like they were having a seizure. According to my boyfriend who looked it up, our unemployment rate is higher than Americas. The only and I repeat /ONLY/ way to get a job(much less an entry-level job) is to have some sort of hook up-- as you better be the best friends with the Siamese twin of a CEO or some shit. Most other jobs 'available' are becoming an escort or some stupid online pyramid scheme. :/
Ontop of that! My parents remembered my college fund and was all like "LOLMINE" and used it to make a dent in their debt (WHICH REALLY DID FUCKING NOTHING O_O). So, there goes my college fund-- which they only gave me like 15% of for Massage Therapy classes :/. The rest I was going to use as an 'emergency fund' of sorts, since oh idk I'VE NEVER BEEN TO THE DENTIST MY ENTIRE LIFE(among other things) . DDDDDDDDDx
So, basically I'm relying on fucking furry porn for money. x__x Not glamours but it /DOES/ bring in some sort of income. Since getting a job is like asking Charlie Sheen to stop . So basically I'm replying on the pocket money of people who wanna see dicks. xDDD;;;
That and I cant even receive the money properly! >__o Paypal can only /SEND/ money over here because BULLSHIT. So I had to ask my boyfriend who lives in America to either buy what I want-- Or send some money over ever now and then. :/
Gone are the days that any whiny 14 year old brat could get a part time job! ;__; I'd even work with complete ASSHOLES for minimum wage! ;___;
Oh wow? Your dad too? xDD My dad got unemployed for whatever reason and was just doing odd jobs here and then was just like I'LL USE MY CREDIT CARD!!!!!11111 and went batshit insane on loans AND DIDN'T TELL MY MOM WTF HE WAS DOING. > :C SHE'S A MATH TEACHER FOR FUCKS SAKE!
and then when they realized how fucked up shit was they were like OOPS LOL.
Yeah. :/ When my boyfriend came over here for a vacation he was like "HOW DO YOU PEOPLE EVEN AFFORD TO EAT." Cause...take like...a video game for example...if the video game costs $80 for Americans...its like...$100 for us. xDDD
Pffttt, I don't mind porn, but drawing DICKS all day will make you be all like "THERE'S GOT TO BE SOMEWHERE I CAN GO TO GET AWAY FROM THIS PLAAACCCEEEEE". But eh. I recently bought a new laptop with the funds-- and some other famous-y artist who does the same thing managed to buy a new car with her money. :/ So...I cant really complain. xDD Just some mild discomfort for some pocket change. ewe
I just checked and apparently the unemployment rate for us is 13% (now remember. were a bunch of cute lil tiny islands), where as America is like 9%.
That's like, the worst thing anybody can do. D: Especially maxing out credit cards. My mom is a teacher, too! Well, a paraprofessional, but still, my dad did things like that too and he was really sneaky about it. I bet your mom must've been freaked out!
Yep. It's so expensive over there and that's unfortunate. There should be more farms or something so that you guys can grow your own food for cheap. D:
DICKS. Oh noes. Oh wow, that's good at least, though. It's MONEY even though you're drawing pr0nz. D:
Well I read everything Gina and I have been where you are before. We lost our house back home too. I even lived in a shed for most of 8th grade when we went to harborside. Now I live in South Carolina. It's nice here and it's less expensive to live here. I've been thinking of going back up North for a year or two and working there so I can see and even meet family I didn't know I had there. I understand the pain your going through and if you need to talk about it more I'm here. You can send me messages on here or even FB if you want. I'm 23 years old and haven't gotten any further in life since I was 18...so I'm definitely struggling too. Keep your head up and eye's open Gina a wonderful opportunity may come to you!
I agree with you about pain. You can't compare someone else's pain to a different situation because everyone was raised differently and have coped with different struggles in their lives. What I might find devastating, you could be okay with. And visa-versa.
In the past, I was falling in and out of being financially stable and being in financial ruin. I've been slowly bringing myself out of my pit, but I've got a long way to go. I just don't have the same relationship with money that others do. I'm a "spend now - save later" type of person. And that SUCKS. But I'm working on it.
Whenever I'm in the green on my money situation, I like to help out my fellow artists and give back to the community, because as you pointed out, the art community seems to be full of people who aren't in the best situations right now.
I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. :[ I know very few people that are not struggling. There is always something. My husband and I certainly struggle often but I know that someday we will build up a nice savings and be able to get on our feet completely.
-nods- I consider us very lucky, I am self employed and my husband's job doesn't offer affordable health insurance so we are both without, but luckily we have been healthy aside from a few injuries. Finances are always hard.
I hope there's a little ray of sunshine poking from the clouds for you soon
It’s not really my business, which is why this poll is anonymous and I’m not asking about it in my journal, but seriously, is there anybody out there NOT struggling to get by? Because a huge number of people I see on dA really are struggling (with bills, animals, food, medical issues, etc.) and I’m just curious. (the rest is kinda unimportant, you can skip it if you want. It just explains what I’m going through as well).
I, like many others, certainly are struggling. I can’t move out of my house because I don’t make enough at my less than part-time job, my sister’s medications are incredibly expensive, and I need to stay at home to take care of the animals while my mom works 2 jobs. My dad JUST moved back in with us, so he’s contributing as well and it’s really not as bad as it was when he was NOT living with us.
The cost of apartments and rent is ridiculous here, but if you want cheap rent in my state, chances are you’ll be living in a very, very bad neighborhood with high crime and I’m not willing to do that. :/
We’re also losing our house, so soon we’ll have to rent one, since my family’s credit is so bad (and even renters do credit checks now). The only thing we have is TV as far as “luxury” bills go (and I don’t even watch TV anyway), no internet and no phone as most of you already know. We have cell phones, but they are only used for emergencies or appointments, and we can’t even get food stamps.
I know that I don’t have it as bad as others, but as that one stamps says: “You could have it worse, but that doesn’t make my pain any less real.” And it’s true. We’re losing the house that we’ve lived in for 13 years now, so for most of my life, I’ve become really comfortable with this house and now we have to move with 6 animals (which will be nightmarish), so of course I’m going to be feeling crappy about it. My parents are always arguing over money or my sister and though it sounds like everyday stuff, you just get really tired of it after a while, you know? As if it doesn’t effect me after a while. It does, but under the circumstances, I really can’t move at this point until I finish school, pay off my student loans and land a full-time job, which is increasingly getting difficult to get for my field. And of course, in this American economy, there’s no guarantee that you’ll even keep the current job you have and a lot of people have to move back in with their parents because they lost their job and are becoming homeless. I know that this is a harsh topic, but unfortunately, this is life and reality here in America and throughout the world.
My pain is not any less real just because I don’t have it as bad as someone else. I don’t see it in that light. If someone is hurting, then they are hurting, no matter how bad the circumstances and it’s still painful for THEM and what THEY are going through, so don’t take it into the wrong context!
Anyway, enough of my rambling, feel free to comment! This is also a good way to vent too so please do so. I’ll respond to every comment as best I can. <3
