Man, oh man oh man, this hits the Nostalgia bone. Right in those feels.

I adore this game, it was one of my favorite games of its era...and honestly, of all the games I've ever played.

On a critical note, the scene was instantly recognizable. It took me less than a second to realize what this was. You've done a fabulous job of recreating the scene from the game, right to the color texture creating the feeling of 16-bit Sprites.

I have to agree with the other critique, however, it that it's difficult for your eyes to focus on the correct part of the image. Him going for the sword is the key of this, I realize, and that is where you want your eyes to fall to.

That does not happen with this image. Your eyes gravitate to the center of the picture, and there is just a river there. The focal point of the image is too low, to the point of almost creating eye strain when you look at it.

The image is beautiful...just bring the focal point of it closer to center, and I think you'll be golden.

I guess I should start by saying this piece has a lot of nostalgia impact for me, as I was one of the people who finished this game in my high school days. Anyone who's played this game will recognize this scene immediately. I think your decision to illustrate this particular moment was a good one.

Your renditions of the objects of the game are all good. Originally these were sprite graphics, and your decision to render them in a more detailed way that remains true to their original shapes is something I think people have come to expect of your work. I especially like the geometric shapes in the water reflections.

The only real constructive criticism I have for this piece is that the contrasts and values are the same for the entire image, which results in there being no real focal point. Everything is rendered exactly the same. Ostensibly I realize this is in part a design decision to keep the art looking like 16-bit graphics, but I believe it could be handled in such a way that the entire piece would be stronger for it.

For example, I think you could take enough liberty with the original sprite graphics to allow for your light source to more clearly direct towards what I know is supposed to be the focal point of the piece (the boy and the Mana sword).

Other than that it looks great. Nice job!

Hm actually there is a light source and shadows, and this is not how it was in the 16 bit version :)

You're misunderstanding my comment, I think. When I wrote "the lights and shadows are the same throughout" I meant, you have the same range of values throughout your entire piece. Not that the lights and darks are the same as each other.

Compare with this image: andrea-koupal.deviantart.com/a… The viewer's eye is immediately drawn to the bulb of the plant in the center of the image. The reason this happens is because this is where the contrast in the picture is the highest.

So, the criticism I offered you was that if you strategically control where your greatest contrast or color saturation or sharpness etc. is, you can control the focal point of the piece.

I hope that makes sense. :)

Hm yeah but your exemple is pretty easy i mean of course in a dark picture with something glowing on top of it you got that. But that would have been artificial there. This is a top view so you don't relly have depth. That said the background is the focus of the art, the waterfall as much as the character or the sword, which still have a more contrasted outline.

That is such an atmospheric and detailed scenery artwork that captures the 'hole' game in one art in a fascinating way :) (Smile)

I want to ask in a humble way, if I could
1. set the colors on black and white / or maybe there is a line art which I am allowed to use
2. print it and
3 (re)color it (with credit to the artist) to learn more and led me lead by the atmosphere of your artwork and the characters/scenery. This means: No commercial use, just uploading it to my 'gallery' with credit to you and linking to the original artwork

You can find examples in my 'gallery'

Man I was so young back then...I had to be no more than 11 or 12 years old when I first picked up that sword of mana ;) I remember it very well though :highfive:

Beautiful! I agree with the critique the only thing I can think of is there seems to be no focal point, but it's all so darn pretty it's no biggie to me. I love the way the sword shines there and how he just looks in awe of it and seems ready to move forward. That's perfect, the perfect feeling.
