This is my entry for the for :iconcoreline-rpg-group: challenge, "Rocket's Red Glare". Or at the very least...Chapter 1 of it. This thing quickly turned into a monster. Still, I hope everyone with enjoy it.

Avengers Infinity idea looks pretty good, actually. Guess members of that team don't like much that she's (a) Captain America?

Including, I guess, the more douchebag versions of Cap.

"The Gentleman" Marcone is a Mob boss from the "Dresden Files" book series. Guy's described as looking like an old-school football coach and he's a pretty sensible man who rewards good work and very much dislikes collateral damage (hence "The Gentleman")… but he still is, a mob boss. Also is somewhat of an opportunistic SOB who is a firm believer of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and considers Harry Dresden as his best "friend" (and circumstances force Harry to follow the same belief with Marcone because Options B through Z are a hell of a lot worse for everybody).

Eventually the crazy that follows Harry and plagues Chicago puts Marcone on a position of power in the local Faerie Courts, as a kind of feudal lord and city's protector. The "protector" part he takes to heart pretty heftily-on a latter book Harry's (temporarily) dead and on the meantime he's the biggest reason Chicago doesn't becomes a smorgasbord for the supernatural. (Other reasons are Harry's friends, but it's the typical "can't be everywhere at once" thing).

On The Line, there is no question about it-when it comes to local supernaturally-based organised crime (emphasis on "organised"-the occasional monster rampage is lamentable but happens), Marcone's the essential "capo di tutti capi".

It's not so much that they don't like her, but amalgams of certain heroes and villains would likely be treated differently by the public at large than the canon versions of said heroes and villains, with amalgams getting a lot of flack for being shams. For example, take how people reacted when heroes such as Captain America, Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man were replaced. Some amalgams would likely get that kind of treatment. And when it comes to how the heroes and villains would react to amalgams of themselves, that would vary from person to person. I'll be getting into that next chapter.

Ah, so the Gentleman is kind of like the Kingpin in a way.

He's like the Kingpin in the "we can't get rid of him even if we'd want to" kind of way. Thankfully he's a (kind of) good guy.

Jim Butcher loves his moral ambiguousness and putting his heroes through tough decisions.

A heroic Kingpin. Without the sumo wrestler powers (and build) and the thug behind a mask of finesse.

Nice shout-outs, man. Substance D ("A Scanner Darkly"-awesome movie), Nuke ("Robocop 2"), Pete and Devon...

In Chicago, at least for now, Goldie rules the drug business, Capone rules the illegal booze business (which is stronger that most people think), and if anything illegal involving the Fair Folk happens within city limits you can be assured that it happened because "The Gentleman" allowed it, and got at least 50% out of it.

This, my friend, is pretty awesome. Definitely waiting to see what is the issue with Mari, the suppressor collar, and the genki taking a (probably temporal) hike.

Thanks. I took some time to research various drugs in movies and so on, just to make sure that I got them right. And I grew up on shows such as Knight Rider and MacGyver.

I'm familiar with Goldie and Capone. But who is the Gentleman?

Thanks. I will be showing why Mari is in such a funk, and I also want to get into the concept I mentioned above, Avengers Infinity. You see, we've seen all kinds of different variations of amalgam characters like the Joker R gang, the Golden Four, and characters like the SOE ladies. But it occurred to me that, just as we get multiple variants of characters amalgamated with other characters, we also see different variations of the canon characters. And so it occurred to me that superhero teams from the different comic companies would come together in the Coreline world. So Avengers Infinity would be like a teaming up of multiple incarnations of the Avengers from the different worlds, and there would likely be other such mega-teams. Does that make sense?

Cool really glad to see this. I kinda wish I could have seen the whole thing before posting but oh well, I do need to get moving on mine. I'll read this over and get back to you about it later.
OrionPax09's avatar
Yeah, I know. And I figured I'd already taken up enough of your time, so...

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this.
Nescaro's avatar
Well I'm glad to give you my time, not like I've got much chance at winning this anyhow. I'm just in for the fun of it.

Well...I'm shocked I didn't see the twist coming seems painfully obvious now.
OrionPax09's avatar
Well, I did my best to keep from making said twist from being overly obvious. I'm glad I did a good job of it.

Well in hindsight the time of the fic is a pretty big clue but yeah you did a pretty good job of it. Of course you just had a character I've been against from day one make total chumps out of some of my favorite ideas...:P
OrionPax09's avatar
Well, if it makes you feel any better, Mari's been getting some very special training since arriving in Coreline. I'll be going into that next chapter.

Also, I did my best to invoke the logical weaknesses of the characters in question. Like Hikari Bane's Venom pump; that's been exploited more than a few times.
Nescaro's avatar
It's okay I'm not actually upset. :) And yes while they did seem to go down a little easily can't really find fault with how you did it, poor Rei though. And yeah the Venom thing's been done several times no problems there.

I'm looking forward to seeing the next chapter, now I really feel like a chump for not being able to get mine done yet. Oh well, great job on this one. :)
