I was hoping to start the year with some fluffy nice images with no controversy. But last week an news item which was almost as big as the fall of Apartide in South Africa, as important as the election of President Obama. The fact that the BNP ( British National Party ) or as their better known to some (the Nazis) voted to not be racist any more.
After the disastrous television appearance of Leader Nick Griffin have they been forced in to a desperate climbdown on some of their most fundamental polices and beliefs? I believe that fascist will do anything to gain power and control. It is once they have control that things get very twisted out of shape. Many have died in that fight worldwide.
If they had been in power now would we be seeing the fall of a British version of Apartide. There has been a great mistrust of the BNP/National Front/English Protection League or which ever name far right ultra nationalist groups choose to call themselves, that to believe that these particular Leopards have finally changed there spots, is very hard to swallow for those of us who have suffered because of their point of view.
On the day of the story, I created three images commenting on the matter. This was the one that I compromised on it's final composition. Because I did believe could have been read the wrong way, if taken out of context. This is the first time in years that I have self edited a political work and toned down the original impact of the image.
The Final work is in the style of a poster for the forthcoming elections. To those who sit and debate with them if you manage to turn them away from their life of hatred. Good work, but joining them worries me. As I said earlier. Fascist will do anything to gain power and control. It is once they have control that things get very twisted out of shape. Many have died in that fight.
I was raised in Southall, Middx, part of Greater London with a large Sikh community, and in the North East London also with a large Asian community and Arabic community. To me this is britpop. And is very a possible future. When battle commences for the top seat in the land will posters like this be used to warn us of a path not to tread?
