Firebringer - Nowhere to Run
7.6K Views|1 Today
"The formel's wings caught an updraft, beating hard. Tek sprang from the hillside, seeming to fly herself for a moment. Jan still thrashed in the gryphon's grasp, but could not break loose. Tek passed beneath them - too low, and cold anguish filled Jan as he realized she had missed her lunge.
Then the wingcat lurched downward suddenly, losing her hold. Her talons tore across his shoulders. He slid free and dropped to the rocky slope. Jan bolted to his feet, wheeling about, and saw Tek skidding downhill with the gryphon's tail caught fast in her teeth.
Tek scrambled to brace herself. She turned, her forelegs splayed, weight thrown back on her hindquarters like a wolf cub playing tug-at-bone. Jan saw her head shaken from side to side, the sinews of her long neck straining, her forehooves lifted from the mountainside as the wingcat fought to flee."
- Birth of the Firebringer

----------------------------

Probably my most detailed work yet. I've been painting this on and off since May 9th! And finally it's done!! I've been planning this painting for a very long time, ever since I read that passage in "Birth of the Firebringer" but was never brave enough to do an illustration this detailed. Well, now I have and I'm dead tired! :faint: I'm still going to continue the Firebringer Illustrations, hopefully there will be more improvement.

Painted in Open Canvas
Time: ...weeks... ...I lost track...

Now what will happen? Is the tail going to get ripped? Or will the tail going to slip? Or are they going to kill the gryphon?

Those weeks of work were worth it; I'm a total Firebringer fan and I love this. Hello, desktop wallpaper.

Yes! So worth it! Wow, I'm glad you like it enough to put up as your wallpaper.
I look back at this piece and wonder how I ever did it...must have been really inspired.
I'm a huge fan too, and just wanted so badly to bring these books to life!

OMG I never pictured Tek in those colors. I might be mistaking her coloring for her mother's though. but I ADORE the pics you have of the story!

you=awesome for these

Yes, I tried to portray her exactly as the author described. I put a lot of effort into these illustrations just to show how awesome this story really is.
Tek is described in the first book as "not the solid or dapple or roan of other unicorns, but paint: pale rose splashed with great irregular blots of black." -(Birth of the Firebringer-Chapter 2)
Her mother, Jah-lila, is a red mare. How I miss reading those books!
Thank you for looking at my illustrations. There really isn't enough tribute for this awesome story!!

aaah I remember now! I was always thinking of her white with red dapple on her bum and red blotchy socks and possibly blotches o her face too. but then it's been forever since I read the books, I can't remember if that really was how I pictured Tek or Jah-lila. either way I always imagined jah-lila with braids intermingled with her hair, kinda gypsy-ish. in my head it fit her perfectly!

I'd love to see a pic of her from you :O

Wow, yeah, I haven't really drawn any other characters except the main three, a gryphon and that horrid wyvern.
Such a pain drawing that thing!
Well I did draw Korr, but looking back I really didn't do him any justice.
He's much more epic and wicked than what I made in that old pic. [link]
I had the thought of doing individual character pics.
Yeah, that's an idea, I may start up with that too. Thanks for the nice comments!

Jan's still young at this point. Shouldn't his horn be a bit smaller?

Ah, well. Very impressive nonetheless.

i'm not sure. i may have overlooked the age-factor. i think i was concentrating too much on the gryphon feathers. took me forever to do those. ugh! thanks for looking!

Curious... What's this story about?

Really, its not your typical unicorn story, no rainbows and magic horns here. Nope.
It's a tale of a unicorn prince who finds his destiny outside the laws of his people and only by reaching out beyond that horizon, can their homeland be saved.
I can't put it into words the awesomeness of this story. You'll have to read it!
It's available on Amazon, and other book-selling websites and stores like Barnes and Noble. Read it, you'll love it!

at first, the unicorns and gryphons are enemies somewhat, but they eventually come to terms with each other. One gryphon in particular becomes an ally and helps the unicorns take back their homeland.

Actually, Jan was a Sable brown until the last chapter of the first book. When Jan was poisoned and fell into the Mere of the Moon his coat changed, to black but he hid it with mud until it was revealed in that last chapter.

This is just epic! The detail is amazing and I love how Tek looks. This would be a great book cover, it reminds me of the cover for the first book with Jan and the Gryphon :D  Very inspiring work!!

thanks for the nice comments. actually, it wasn't my writing I featured in the description. it's the work of Meredith Ann Pierce, author of the Firebringer Trilogy. All I did was pay tribute to her descriptive pen-work and the coolest novels I've ever read!
