"He watched the smoke arise and swirl about the ceiling, some of it escaping through the light well illuminating the chamber's center. It was then Jan realized that he had entered the room, skirting the sun curtain as if by instinct, staying in shadow. He stood now only a few paces away from the firebowl, and felt the last of whatever influence had brought him there dissolve. He was himself again, fully aware. And then a cold, sliding voice behind him said:
"When you have had done admiring my fire, little dark thing, turn around, that I may look you in the eye."
- Birth of the Firebringer, Chapter 15

Finally, I've come back to my Firebringer Illustration series. This one, I have to say, isn't really my best work, but I tried. I had a lot of new elements to deal with and not a lot of time to work with them.
This has been one of my favorite parts from the first book. Just the thought of seeing the Wyvern Queen kind of morphing out of the dark corner of the cavern sent chills down my spine when I read the above passage. So I decided to take the challenge and try to bring that scene to life.

Okay, that's really good. That was an amazing scene and was worth all the wait.

Oh thank you so much!
Yes it was a scene that still sends chills down my spine!

This is wonderful! Though it did always annoy me in those books that what the author called 'wyverns' were clearly actually hydra. A wyvern is like a dragon but with two legs instead of four.

Thank you! You have a point ((especially since my sister started playing Monster Hunter, I was reminded about the wyvern design))
but I truly was trying my best to bring to life the descriptions in the book. I appreciate you having a look!

This is very close to what I imagined the scene looked like, except that I expected the firebowl to be on a flatter surface, and the Mistress doesn't exactly have "blunt, badger-like forepaws". I assumed you tried to give her those, but in the end they simply didn't fit the rest of her.

As it is, I'm impressed!

true, and i do appreciate your critique. i suppose i imagined the wyverns to have a more dragon-like appearance. i did have a time planning how i was going to draw this creature, but in future illustrations i'll try and remember the descriptions more. i think i was focusing more on the creep factor of the scene, jan's frightened expression and imagining the silky voice of the wyvern queen behind him. perhaps i got so into the emotion of the illustration that i probably left out a lot of details. i may return to this one and edit it someday. thanks for the input and checking it out! ^_^

Ugh.. I just read through that book earlier this week.. The whole time he was being charmed by her I literally wanted to scream!! I knew the trap she was setting and.. agh.. It was torture.. The longer he stood there, the longer it took, the more I wanted to jump in and shove him out of there. @__@ It was crazy..

I just finished the third book of the series a few minutes ago.

I've had the second book for maybe a couple of years, but I've now gotten the first and third..
It was amazing *3*
I was so lost in the third book today I almost missed my stop on the train. lol

Oh, I actually started reading the "Firebringer" novel with the deer. It was very interesting. I didn't get to finish it though, I think it was the pace of the book and I wasn't into it at the time, but the storyline was interesting. It was like Bambi and Watership Down put together.
