Ten years ago, on the California coast, there lived a sea lion colony. One female in particular had twin pups, Sombi and Nombi, they were curious from the very beginning. As soon as he could amble, Sombi began wandering towards the edge of the colony, "Sombi, dear," his pomother said "That's not a good idea, come back here, Sombi," she yelled. The first animal Sombi met outside his colony was Modo, one of the local dolphins, "You're a strange looking sea lion," Sombi said, "I'm not a sea lion, my name is Modo and I'm a dolphin," Modo replied. "I'm Sombi and it's a pleasure to meet you," Sombi said, knowing how much they would need each other, Sombi and Modo became best friends. He then went back to the colony, and told his mother and brother about his new friend, Modo. Pretty soon, it was the beginning of a big day for Sombi, he and his twin brother Nombi were big enough to leave the rocks and enter the water. As usual, Sombi got into trouble, he was eager to take the plunge, "Sombi, finish your breakfast or the seagulls will get it," his mother yelled, it seemed to Sombi she yelled a lot. They went into the water and started swimming, "Now listen closely, this is the kelp forest and over there is the open sea, you must never go out there until you are old enough," Sombi's mother said softly. Suddenly, Sombi was swept away by the current, his mother tried to go after him, but was not fast enough, just then, Modo came and saved him. He then brought Sombi back to the shore and swam back to his pod, "Alright, I'm not going to yell, I'm just glad you're okay," Sombi's mother said, he then went to find Modo's pod. Having found them, he and Modo played for a while, they met a harbor seal named Spot, the three friends explored the kelp forest, they played hide and seek, it was up to Spot to find Sombi and Modo. Having found Modo, Spot went to find Sombi, Modo detected him, having found Sombi, the three friends went their separate ways for the evening, Sombi and Spot went back to their colonies, Modo went back to his pod. Three years passed, the kelp forest was blooming in the heat of summer, Sombi and Modo were big and old enough to play by themselves, Sombi had some new hiding places he couldn't wait to try out, Modo scanned around the seafloor for a while. "You're under the dock, Sombi, try again," Modo said, "How does he do that?" Sombi wondered, he tried another spot, "Oh not the old walrus and carpenter trick," Modo groaned, Sombi slipped off to another hiding place. It wasn't easy fooling a dolphin's echolocation, he started following his trail immediately, and found him again, Sombi tried a harder spot, but Modo found him there, too. Now, Sombi needed a brilliant idea, he thought of a place where Modo could never detect him, it worked. The next day, the seagulls were in an uproar, Sombi and Modo went to see what all the noise was about, suddenly, one of them shouted, "Quiet!" that was Reema talking, a seagull that made her way to being leader of the colony. "Sombi, can you please watch my eggs for me?" Reema asked, "Where's your mate, Riko?" Sombi wondered, "He is out fishing for me, I need to check on the rest of the colony," Reema replied. While Sombi watched Reema's eggs, Modo acted as a lookout, "How long do we have to stick around with the seagulls?" Modo asked, "Until Reema and her mate come back," Sombi replied, naturally, the sight of a sea lion and a dolphin watching some eggs brought on the usual string of gawkers and thrill seekers. Some strange noises brought Modo away from the cliffs, it turned out to be a boat "Hey, will you cut that out?" Modo said, but the boat just ignored him, "Eww, your singing stinks, will you quit it! Hello in there!" Modo said, "Sombi, Sombi, Sombi, Sombi, come here, Sombi," an elephant seal grunted, "What is it, I'm supposed to be egg sitting, you know," Sombi said, the elephant seal replied, "Sombi, it's your dolphin buddy, he's got the whole bay crazy, do something and quick, Sombi, come on." The elephant seal had a point, at that moment, Modo was teasing a crab that was crawling through the kelp forest, but this time, someone got the best of Modo. "He deserved it," the elephant seal grumbled, "Hey, he's my friend," Sombi said, Sombi and Modo suddenly remembered, "Uh oh, the eggs," Modo shouted. A fox tried to snatch the eggs, "Freeze, touch those eggs and you're dead meat, I mean it, creep," Sombi yelled, "I didn't touch those eggs, although I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you," the fox barked in humiliation. Just then, Reema came back, "How did you do?" Reema asked, "Nothing to report, other than that we saved the eggs from a fox," Sombi replied, "See you later, boys," Reema shouted. Sombi and Modo then went to explore some more, just then, they met a sea otter named Rim, "I'm Sombi and this is my best friend Modo," Sombi said, "I'm Rim, and it's good to meet you," Rim replied, the three went to find Spot. Once in the kelp forest, they found him, all of a sudden, they heard a distressing sound, it came from the north, the four friends found out that it was a gray whale calf, "I'm Sombi and these are my friends, Modo, Spot, and Rim, and we're here to help," Sombi said. "What do you need help with?" Spot asked, "I'm trying to find my mom," the whale replied, they kept searching until they found a whole pod of gray whales, the calf swam back to her mom and the four friends continued to explore the bay. "Are you sure you know where we're going?" Modo asked, "Sure, the kelp forest is this way, and you've never seen the open sea, come on," said Sombi, Modo and the others had this feeling there was trouble ahead. Spot and Rim were suddenly attacked by a school of Humboldt squid, "Look at these things, Modo, do you think we can eat them?" Sombi asked, "Who would eat something that looks like that?" Modo replied, Sombi tried to save Spot and Rim from the squid, but he was attacked. After rescuing Spot and Rim, Sombi and Modo came back to settle the score with those squid, Sombi, meanwhile, had got stuck in a frond of kelp. "Sombi, get out of there before something happens quickly!" Modo shouted, but something did, “Quick, come on, this will be fun,” Sombi shouted, Modo didn’t know what to do, “Hey this is great, come on, hurry up, Modo, come with me,” Sombi said. Maybe Sombi was having a terrific time, but Modo was pretty scared, he knew he had to rescue Sombi, so he swam alongside the current, trying to keep up, with not much success. Then, Modo saw the current up ahead, maybe he could get into it and save his friend, if he hurried, but he was too late, there was only one way to catch up with Sombi now, he tried racing the flow, but that didn’t work either, Modo just couldn’t swim fast enough, the current took Sombi further south. He wasn’t really worried until he lost sight of Modo, he saw a huge black shape in the distance and thought to himself “Is it Modo?” The approaching figure was not Modo at all, but something worse, a great white shark. Sombi tried to get further out to sea, so the shark wouldn’t see him. But the shark could still smell him and came right at him, then came Modo, he surveyed the scene, sometimes a dolphin’s got to do what a dolphin’s got to do. He sped up like a torpedo, straight at the shark, as soon as he hit scored a direct hit, Modo started swimming away, he said to himself, “What am I thinking? that shark is five times my size,” he then came up with a much more sensible plan he led the shark away and got himself into shallow water. Sombi kept drifting along, he was feeling a little concerned, because the water was getting warmer and warmer. Sombi was alright, except for being a little warm, he had lost track of Modo now, and he was drifting further and further from home. By the time the moon rose, Sombi spent the night in a shallow cove, now and then, he saw town lights flashing in the background, he heard mysterious noises in the night. His trip wasn’t fun anymore, it had turned into something lonely and frightening, he began to wish he never got caught in the current and wished he was home. He was trembling and edgy in his sleep, hoping the morning would be better, when daylight came, he saw a protected bay in the distance, for one happy moment, he impulsively thought he was home and cried out for joy, but he looked again and remembered he was too far south. Modo had not given up chase, not by a long shot, he was following the current in hot pursuit, to keep up his spirits, he began singing a heroic dolphin song, “Here comes the dolphin! Skilled and brave! Here comes the dolphin, your life he will save!” he continued to follow the current all the way to the Baja Peninsula, “Alright, punk, tell me, have you seen a sea lion come by?” Modo said angrily, “Not lately, I’m a fish eater, sea lions and other mammals are not my concern, so no, I did not,” an orca replied. In fact, Sombi was nowhere near the Baja Peninsula, he had lost his way and is now the furthest from home he had ever been. He swam until he ended up on Cocos Island, west of Costa Rica, he asked a gull for help, “Pardon me, how do I get back to San Francisco Bay?” “That’s a long ways north of here, amigo, just follow the coast north until you reach cold water,” the gull replied. “Which way is north?” Sombi asked, “North is that way on my right,” said the gull, “I finally know how to get home, now I just need to find Modo,” Sombi said to himself. Modo, meanwhile, had continued on down the Mexican coast until a huge storm came that afternoon, he decided to head into a sheltered cove until the storm passed. Under the now fresh, bright sky, Modo resumed his search for Sombi, he saw in the distance an animal who might be helpful. “Excuse me, I’m looking for a friend of mine, he’s a sea lion, have you seen him?” Modo called out, “I can’t say that I did, and I also need some help,” a sea turtle said, “What is it you need help with? it needs to be quick,” Modo asked. “Agreed, I’m caught in a net, you need to get me out before any sharks show up,” the turtle replied, Modo got the net off as quickly as he could and then went on his way to find his friend as the the sea turtle thanked him and went his own way. Sombi, far away, had reached the northwest coast of Nicaragua, now it was evening and he was plenty tired, maybe someone could help him find a place to sleep, “You look exhausted, you can stay with us tonight,” a booby replied, she showed Sombi to her family’s nest and found a place for him to rest alongside, Sombi was asleep within moments. Modo knew he was on the right track, he had trailed Sombi from the Baja Peninsula all the way down the coast of Mexico, now if he just kept going, maybe he would find the friend he missed so much, but it was the end of a long day of traveling and he went to spend the night in a sheltered cove. Sombi, meanwhile, was fast asleep, dreaming about San Francisco Bay, including a very sad one about Modo and himself playing together when they were younger, it seemed so real, he could almost hear Modo’s voice. The next morning, Sombi went to catch some fish for himself and the booby family, “Thanks, you’re very helpful today,” the booby said, “Happy to help, it’s the least I could do for your family, I helped protect a nest of seagull eggs before,” Sombi replied. He then went to see off his new friends before continuing north, after several hours traveling, Sombi came to the southwest coast of Mexico, he could see a bait ball of mackerel, he caught as many as he could eat before moving on. Suddenly, a tiger shark came his way, Sombi tried to flee, but the shark saw him right away, escape was now extremely difficult, he called for help although he figured it was useless, no one could hear him, but someone did. Just when the shark almost had him, Modo sped fast towards it, then gave a hard bonk on the head, then the shark gave up and swam away. “You alright, Sombi?” Modo asked, “I am thanks to you,” Sombi replied, the worst was behind them, they were bursting with joy, because finally, they were back together. All they had to do now was get back home to San Francisco Bay, they rode in the bow wake of a cargo ship for several days, only leaving it to feed. It was several more days before they reached the coast near Tijuana, it wasn’t too long before they reached the coast of California, Sombi was suddenly dazed at the sight of a pretty female sea lion, he came up to her, “I’m Mala, who are you?,” she said, “I’m Sombi, you’re the prettiest sea lion I ever seen,” Sombi replied. He and Mala became friendlier and friendlier, Modo was unsure of how to react, “Mala, come back with me to San Francisco Bay, you’ll be welcome there,” Sombi said, “I’d love that a lot,” Mala replied. “Mala, this is my best friend, Modo,” said Sombi, “My pleasure,” Modo replied, on the way back home, it wasn’t long before Modo felt the same way as Sombi, “Hello, handsome, I’m Bindi,” said a female dolphin, “I’m Modo, you’re prettier than a pearl,” Modo replied. Several days went by, and the four travelers were now at Half Moon Bay, evening had fallen, it was the end of another long day, they settled down and watched the sunset, then went to rest. The next morning, they were on the final stretch of the journey, after a few hours, the Golden Gate Bridge came into view, their trek was over, they were finally home, “We made it, Modo, we’re home,” Sombi said, they were also reunited with their friends Spot and Rim, who were introduced to their mates, Mala and Bindi, all of a sudden, Modo picked up a call for help, it was a little boy. Having fallen off a boat and nearly drowning, he was caught in the sights of a great white shark, Modo came in at high speed, straight at the shark. Assessing the situation, Sombi attempted to lure the shark away, buying time for Modo to save the boy, now weakened by the chase, the shark backed down. Having successfully dodged the shark, he rejoined Modo helped get the boy to the dock, the two friends were in the boy’s thankful embrace, after the rescue, they went to rejoin their mates. Months had passed, Sombi and Mala now had a pup, also, Modo and Bindi had a calf, her name was Pearl, while Sombi and Mala’s pup was named Bando. The two youngsters became friends like their parents before them, “You’re a strange looking dolphin,” Pearl said to Bando, “You’re a dolphin, I’m a sea lion,” he replied. All across San Francisco Bay, a new generation began, for Sombi and Modo, one adventure ended, and another had begun, the adventure of family.
