Description

I don't have a thing about sleepy bunnies, trust me.

Heheheh, coincidences aside there is a reason why I've had a few pictures of a sleepy Judy. -A big aim of my monthly art challenge was to improve skills and develop my style, and lighting is a key part of that.

The first sleepy Judy artwork I did was done how I've seen most artists do colours and shading. -Do the character first, then shade in darker or lighter areas. And while I do like that piece, the lighting was not at a level I'd be happy staying at. One thing I decided was, with my watercolour style and interest in more intense lights and contrasts, the standard method of doing light and shading wasn't going to cut it.

Last month I tried something different, I tried planning out the lighting first and then doing the majority of the light and shading work as I drew in the piece itself. I was incredibly happy with the result, though this was ultimately a daytime piece with subtle shading and lighting.

In contrast this takes the method and really gives it a full run down, with a dark scene, more intense lighting, background etc... The whole method involved doing the background first, getting the colour and shading to a level I like it, then drawing in the Bun herself (with some adjustments from the original Zinktober piece).

Overall I'm very happy with how this is going on, it's definitely on the right track. The only issues are that this was a little rushed (he says, having spent 4.5 hours on it), given that this is literally at the end of a very busy month, squeezing in to get the monthly challenge done.

Additionally, I'd experimented with some adjustments to brush controls in the last piece (tilt control for size) that I hadn't saved, so had to try and get something working up again. I did feel less in control, and this piece certainly has more streaks and stuff than last month's. Either way, lots of free time coming up, which will mean time to experiment and really set and save some good brush presets.

Overall, good progress, I'm very happy with where this is going.
