Description
Another character from said hypothetical project as Jean and Inuri.
One of the things I really wanted to play with was the idea of an industrializing (the settings are 1920's-1930's era) aboriginal Australia, where the culture was taken and developed from those that had existed there for thousands of years before and, somewhat united, they are trying to assert themselves on the global stage (similar to a mix between Japan in this era and post independence india). By itself, it's a major worldbuilding challenge, for instance working out what crops would be bred (there was a different alternate history project, 'land of red and gold' that was useful for inspiration for this) and going through various language records, picking out potential names for characters, cities, etc.
While there are many factions and tribes, the peoples from Tasmania (or in this universe Laguntruwita) are some of the most advanced, assertive and culturally unique. Indeed, in many cases they are seen as the more stereotypical Australians (or Ostralians), as compared to those on the mainland (mainly due to being the force that led the continent to unite).
Rala here is intended as a silent movie star a-la Buster Keaton, and capturing that energy (as well as the morphology of Tasmanian Devils) was something that stumped the first artist I commissioned, so I moved to drawing him myself. This is more his on-screen persona, similar to Charlie Chaplin's 'Tramp' (with his clothing having some cultural significance/ meaning leaning into such). In person, he's very excitable, sociable, optimistic and friendly.
