FaLLEN Ch. 3 Page 16-17 by OgawaBurukku FaLLEN Ch. 3 Page 16-17 by OgawaBurukku

Haven't added this to my website yet, but here are the pages I had hoped to post Tuesday... darr. I just can't get stuff done when I say I will. But look at her hair... LOOK AT IT. The inking... the inking...

I'm going to try to get another set of pages done before the end of the weekend, but I won't make any promises because I am really bad about meeting self-imposed deadlines. Maybe I should give myself a salary. Maybe I should sleep... I've been awake for nearly 24 hours. Why? I don't know.

I originally had these two pages taped together to make one super page, but when I tried to scan it I found I had to cut it in half just to fit D: For that reason there is a white gap down the center that will look fine printed but looks kinda blah here.

I really had fun doing these pages because it was a nice change of pace from drawing a bunch of women sitting at a table talking. I had to, like, be creative... AND I finally got to use that far right panel setup. In vol. 2 of Bakuman there is a panel like this with the editors looking badass-- it's kind of overkill, actually, I have no idea why Takeshi Obata set it up like that, but I tagged that page when I was reading it and said "someday I want to use a setup like this!", and voila. My version is different, but it's close enough that I feel like I should mention what it's based off of. At my first mangaka assistant job, I worked for a guy who had me go in and mark pages in 20th Century Boys that had cars in them because at the time my boss couldn't draw cars very well. He had me do that a lot for other things too, and I got in the habit of doing it whenever I was at home reading manga and saw something I thought would be a good trick or whatever to convey an emotion, etc. Good staging, good effects, anything I really liked or was impressed by would get a little sticky note inside it. A lot of my books still have pieces of paper in them XD I think comic artists especially tend to learn from other artists more than from drawing from life... I still can't believe we didn't have life drawing lessons at the school for manga I went to.

I made a few mistakes and ended up slicing my hand semi intentionally ("This blade isn't sharp anymore, see?" *slice* "Ooh, blood...") with an art knife, but I'm glad I waited until I was all better instead of trying to ink this when I was sick earlier this week. Overall I had fun doing this.

I am in so much love with your comic, I love the style, it's just WOW.

And I also have a question (sorry you probably will think this question is annoying)
What program do you use?
Manga Studio? Or is it traditional?

Wah, thank you so much!! I'm really glad you like it!

Everything is traditionally done (inks, tones, etc) except for SFX and dialogue, which I do in Photoshop 5.0. The reason I do SFX digitally is because the comic is bilingual, so it's easier to edit it that way.

Wow, you did all of it traditionally?! Could you please give me tips on how you drew it so well?!
Do you do the panels traditionally too? I have so much trouble with them because I can never get them straight enough!

I'd really like to have photoshop, but All I have is sai and manga studio
But man, your comic is really beast, and I'm loving it a lot so far, I'm definitely gonna do some fanart!!

Yup! I even use dip pens... it can be a messy business sometimes, heh.

If you have trouble with panels, I'd recommend you get some special manga paper that has rulers along the sides so that you can accurately line up your panels. I used to have to draw out my own guides, which was a nightmare, but this is a hundred times easier. I don't know if they sell any where you live, but my husband sells it, actually, so if you were interested in getting some he'd be willing to sell you a pack!

Sai and Manga Studio are good programs. I have used Manga Studio in the past but I have trouble drawing perspective and backgrounds unless I have a ruler in real life I can use. Plus, I tend to get lazy if I'm working digitially :p  But a lot of artists prefer Sai for coloring, and it is DEFINITELY cheaper. I would use it myself, but I have a Mac and Sai doesn't have a Mac version XD

WAAAH!! Really? I would LOVE fanart!! If you draw any, I'll post it to my website with your name and a link to your art galleries :D

I actually have a starter deleter series of dip pens, I'm just getting started whith them, but they are terrible for coloring, i think I need different ink xD

Really?! I'd be very interested in seeing it!! Does he sell them online? :D

I honestly didn't like the coloring, manga studio debut 4 was my first program, I'd love to get the new manga studio ex 5, but it's expensive!
Well that's a shame! I've never really had a mac before!

I would LOVE to draw it! I love arma~ I think she would be really fun to draw!!
Well, I guess I'll get crackin! xD

Oh yeah, you don't want to color with dip pens. Those are just for doing the line art-- but if you want to work traditionally, Copic markers are the way to go for coloring. I used to use them a lot before I went digital, simply because my scanner wasn't able to get all the details in the colors. But that's my scanner's problem, not the markers'.

We're getting the website up, but it's been slow XD We do take special orders off the site, though, so if you want anything you can send me a note and I'll give you a private link to one or two images we have of the items. We also sell Copic markers for pretty cheap, heh.

I said I use Manga Studio, but I actually use the original Japanese version, Comic Studio, which didn't have any coloring capabilities (and if it did, they weren't very good...). Sai is definitely better for coloring. My friend said the new English version of Manga Studio has a pretty decent coloring program attached, and you can go to their website and download a free demo (or so I hear).

Sweet!! Can't wait to see your version of Arma!!

I have 100 copic markers! I'm gonna color the fanart with them~ I'm in the inking process~
Yes! thank you! I love my colored drawings but it seems like my scanner tears them apart!

that actually sounds pretty cool! I'd like to check it out~

yeah, the coloring for manga studio 5 is basically like photoshop, so i really want it! (well coloring wise)

I'll probably be very picky about drawing her xD

Yes, it was supposed to be out in April, but there were difficulties with the studio doing the mastering. I can't really get into it here on a public forum though.

We have all the album art done, but you are welcome to manifest at your convenience for us! We would be super appreciative.

P.S
FaLLEN looks amazing in print. The online comics are fantastic, but there's just something about it being on paper...

Oh, no, I get it, shit happens. You don't have to go into detail, and I can guess, haha XD

I might do an album release gift art or something when it comes out, then. I'll be less busy in the fall, anyway.

Ah, thank you! I'm actually putting together the next chapter's book right now. I think it's going to look a lot better now that I have a better feel for how the print company works. Trying to squeeze some additional art in the back.

This is one of your most gorgeous pages to date. I know one of the biggest challenges in sequential art is balancing the details with the ability ti repeat them and still leave room for dialogue.

Thanks! I really enjoyed working on this set. And you are very right about that! That's why some artists, despite being fantastic illustrators, cannot make it as mangaka.

And that's why here in the states we have artists who make their entire careers out of comic book cover art (no joke.)

Dude! I HATE THAT. I remember that was one reason I stopped reading comics-- I was sick of seeing a really kickass cover and the art inside the book didn't match the cover art. At all. I remember I got psyched when they started making Thundercats comics when I was in college, and I picked up the first issue because it had amazing cover art. The inside art was all blocky and blah looking. In Japan they are actually starting to do that a little with some titles-- they use the animation character designer for the cover art but the mangaka isn't the same. It's so deceptive :(

I know it's often one of the problems that crop up with team-based comics. Although I didn't know they were doing that in Japan as well.

Yup yup. Learn from the masters! Even though I went to a manga school, most of the tips and tricks I've picked up are from trial and error mimicking others' techniques. How to books are good for some things, too. School was a total waste...
