Yes, I understand what you mean. Ideally, having someone who knows the topics teach you is the way to go, it helps a great deal to start off.

My worry is that being overwhelmed by terminology can demoralize the same as that lack of "steady progress" you mentioned.

Just remember that no matter how you approach it, self learning will always be the hard way, I think it's almost impossible to get rid of the feeling that you aren't making all the progress you could. But you are making progress, you must get used to it.

Regarding the humidity thing, that's something only really affects color (well maybe also dispersion but unless there's literally fog it shouldnt make much difference).

So don't mind that too much.

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

And good luck!

Friendly reminder that "technical terminology" is just that. Knowing it might help you do better art but it's not a requirement. Most of those concepts are fairly recent, and GREAT pieces of art can be found +50000 years far back.
I  think it's much more important to understand how light behaves.
Light:
-have a point of origin or various.
-have intensity and color
-reacts on surfaces and through substances (including air/humidity).

Use those key points to observe and understand what's happening in each picture you see or scene you witness, use references, and try to apply what you learn on your work.
