Yes, I understand what you mean. Ideally, having someone who knows the topics teach you is the way to go, it helps a great deal to start off.
My worry is that being overwhelmed by terminology can demoralize the same as that lack of "steady progress" you mentioned.
Just remember that no matter how you approach it, self learning will always be the hard way, I think it's almost impossible to get rid of the feeling that you aren't making all the progress you could. But you are making progress, you must get used to it.
Regarding the humidity thing, that's something only really affects color (well maybe also dispersion but unless there's literally fog it shouldnt make much difference).
So don't mind that too much.
