Tale - A day in Death's life --- Revised EditionMade possible with the support of Patrons on Patreon. Death watched, tranquil like the wind rocking the waves down upon the shore. Screams. Memories. Recollections of those lost at sea – lost forever, as Death never was one to tread upon the vast expanses of liquid treachery. However, Death was not one to shirk Her duties. Lost as the deep seafarers became to Her, those mortals who subsisted on the bounties of the coastline remained within Her grasp. For no reason she could think of, Death glanced up towards the fiery blues of twilight mirroring the clear waters below. She took a couple of steps forward and halted cleanly at the edge of the promontory. Down below, Death saw the windswept, corroded corpse of a Human, its torn dress partially submerged by the waves. Several meters away stood its disoriented soul. As soon as the soul spotted Her, it vanished. As Death prepared to pursue the fugitive into the Otherrealm, a cry aimed at Her presence disrupted Her focus. Deliberately, She turned round to stare back at the source of the cry. Within killing distance, a young man stood petrified, a bouquet of flowers clutched as tightly as life itself in his trembling hands. "Don't jump!" The man cried in tears. "Please don't jump!" Death stared, Her black, impenetrable eyes judging the Human before Her. Images flashed, twined and superimposed in Her mind, and within moments Death knew everything. "Please don't jump, please," the man pleaded, bawling out madness. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry…" As his soul spiraled into grief he fell to his knees, unkempt nails tearing at his cheeks. Death contemplated the situation, and the rotting corpse down below. A trivial argument: the woman had fled their coastal home in a fit of anger, this man close at her heels. Here, the argument had escalated, and ended in an unwanted tragedy that, since then, saw this man return every day, apologies in hand, to every day again resist the unbearable urge to throw himself off the cliff and join his lost lover. They would not be joined, however, Death knew, for the woman's soul did not stand by his side. Clearly, the woman's soul sought something else – perhaps, someone else. One of the many lost at sea. Death would not know for certain until She caught the fugitive soul. For now, She could but stare back at the man dying of selfish regret. No longer a man, no, but a shell: a container for sorrow and despair, a hollowed husk losing grip on its miserable life with each ravenous cry. This would not be a good death. So Death stated, "You will not be joined." Gradually, the man's cries subsided. The soul within shifted and writhed, twisted and wailed; behind wide eyes played out the sort of tragedy Death had witnessed innumerable times across generations. Before long, the man's soul spiked; denial and cruelty fused. His face contorting, the man spat out, "Wha—You don't know—How can you—Who do you think you are!" Impassive, Death stated, "The corpse below is hollow. She does not wait for you—" "Who do you think you are, woman!" The man sprang to his feet, flailing bloodied fingers and petals. "I know she's waiting for me! I know she loved me!" His soul reared up and jolted. "I know she still does! I've always been good to her! I—" Jolt upon jolt; clearly, the man now remembered the truth of his guilt. Violent spikes coated, protected, desperately tried to conceal this truth beneath verbal distraction. "Please," the man ployed, sniffling as he grabbed his head. "Please, don't jump…" Death took a step forward and stated, "She did not jump." The man's sniffling waned. The soul within calmed – a dark, clouded calm before a heavy storm. The man's rationality sought solutions – ways in which to terminate this, to him, terrifying confrontation. In response, Death intruded. Black eyes; chains, tying the young man to his guilt. Images, memories forced upon him, of his beloved Aurelia standing at the cliff's edge, shouting, hating him, shoving him away from her. He'd grabbed her wrists and shouted in return. And then… and then… And then, like a feather plucked, Aurelia had been thrown to the winds. He collapsed to his knees, hysterical, clawing at his eyelids. Still he saw her: his beloved Aurelia, tugging herself away from his grip, and slipping… And, at that very moment when love turned to possession, he'd let her go. For, once dead, she would always be his. "Aureliaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!" Makeshift muscle twitched in Death's arm. Aurelia had heard. She had sensed. She reappeared now, several meters away, braving Death's presence with an ethereal glare not unlike Her own. Death saw. Anger. Revenge. Images flooded Death's senses and superimposed on the man's guilt: Aurelia, waiting by the sea for a lost lover; Aurelia, to fill the void and feed her belly, taking this abusive, greedy man as husband. Conjugal violence, blame, spite; she'd ran away, hoping to catch a glimpse of her lost lover's ship. And now, she finally comprehended the desperate greed behind her husband's guilt. He had killed her. Desired her so ardently that he'd done nothing to preserve her life. Hatred twisted Aurelia's bright soul into a tentacular monstrosity. One thought only emerged from the grey, tar-like entity: kill. And Death replied, "No." Kill him! "No." Aurelia screeched; rage ripped through the walls of reality. Beneath Death's feet, rocks cracked loose. Without a word, Death outstretched Her hand. Within Her palm Blackness stirred, twisted and extended; It took on the form of an enormous scythe, held aloft with ease. Immediately Aurelia's soul spiked in defense, soon to shrink into submissive jerks. With one last spike, she vanished from sight. Death turned then Her attention back onto the soul's murderer. The snivelling man had lost himself into a deep state of disingenuous regret. Death saw within his soul the truth of repentance: guilt over love lost, solitude, and grief; not a single selfless thought, nor regret for the life taken. Only the pursuit of greed into death. Death considered the man's inner plea. She was not one to kill without reason – not anymore. Mortal justice held no value in Her eyes. However, as She surveyed the crushed flowers trapped in the man's shaking hand, Death suspected that Aurelia's soul would never let the man rest. She would haunt him until her presence drove him into suicide, causing thus another soul to wander the Otherrealm. Death grunted. Peeved, She glanced over Her shoulder, at the darkening skies and the waves below. The waves. The sea. Another lost in such a vexing place? Unacceptable. Beneath Death's feet, the rocks cracked further. Scythe vanishing from Her hand, Death strode forward. In her wake rocks roared and rumbled; She felt the promontory's collapse, every snap of the man's fragile bones as the avalanche crushed him between rolling boulders. Dead upon impact; gone before his mangled body even hit the waters. Death did not look back as she faded from sight, rocks tumbling still into the waves down below....
