how long did it actually take you to start drawing Merlin/Arthur without a reference?

When it comes to their faces I still don't. If I try just drawing them out of my head then it does kinda looks like them, but it doesn't look "real". (If that makes any sense?)

I don't see any problem with using reference photos though. Professional portrait painters don't meet the person and then try to do the portrait from memory out of their head once the sitter has left the room.

So I still need to find a decent reference photo to use for their faces.

Though their hair I can adjust, and their pose/bodies/clothes I can change and add myself. (Sometimes more successfully than others. :g:)

ahhh cool :D thanks for telling me :) it helps.

I haven't been drawing seriously for a while...maybe a year. Even half of the year were drawing horses and wolves. I only started drawing people this year so... :D

I just had a look at your gallery and I really like what you're doing.

It would be worth you getting a really soft pencil, like a 6B, just for doing the really dark shadows and the dark shading on Merlin's hair etc. It's amazing the difference it makes, (no matter how much you go over and over with an HB you'll never get a really nice deep black, like you will with a 6B)

okay, I'm going to try and take some money and get some nice pencils soon!

It doesn't have to be a "good" one, just a 70p 6b will do the trick.

cool. - Hey is it alright if I use your Arthur picture (the one that's not coloured and just uses pencils and maybe a pen?) as a reference?

Yeah sure, by all means, (that's the one based on the same reference photo that you used I think). It'll be very interesting to see whether you find using a drawing for reference is easier than using a photo. Very interested to see how it comes out.

This is beautiful! Your pointillism and clean lines make gorgeous illustrations as always. I also love the way you framed this, with just enough of the plants to give geographical context but nothing to distract from the image's storytelling.

Thank you very much.

I'm really glad you liked the plants and the framing.

I'd like to get the hang of drawing slightly more of a scene though. (But without it turning into a confusing muddle). One of my big problems is the fact that I'm rubbish at drawing furniture and room interiors, it's something I really need to practise.

Yes, the arms are too short. Arms are my nemesis. (I really should have cheated and just grew all that undergrowth another two foot to cover them up.)

Thank you so much.

My rotring pen is broken, and I can't afford to buy a new one, so I used an old fashioned dip pen to do this one.

I used to have terrible problems with dip pens...they'd catch on the weave of the paper and splatter, or I'd touch them down for a moment too long and I'd get a big blob of ink instead of a tiny dot...

I must have suddenly acquired the knack though, as it was fine this time. (Though it is still a pain having to dip the pen in the ink every five seconds. :g: )

no problem ^^

oh, that sucks
well, I have to admit I prefer dip pens XD
they last longer - well, the ink does - and give more interesting lines than pens ^^
(but I know what you mean, I got those splattered ink dots all over my papers often enough lol)

I did another dip pen drawing today...and no problems with splatter or anything. Maybe I was using a paper that didn't agree with it before.

They do give more interesting lines than pens, I do agree.

haha, yeah, maybe :3
though I find it depending on the direction you draw o.O
with the structure of the paper or against it :3

they totally do ^^
