BL Harlequine GeneticsHarlequines are a fantasy breed. While the genetic system it uses originates from Real Life horse genetics, the behavior of genes, their distribution, and how their code is displayed has been altered, formatted, and sometimes combined, to suite this fantasy breed.
Terms to know:
expression - how a gene appears and/or behaves
Heterozygous - Single copy of a gene
Homozygous - Two copies of the same gene
Order of Dominance - The way in which various genes show over top of each other. Some genes hide other genes (example, black hides flaxen)
Recessive - requires 2 copies of the gene to show, otherwise the horse is a carrier. May have different expression if it is tied to a specific gene. Other genes may hide it.
Dominant - Only requires a single copy of a gene to show, with no change in expression if a second copy is present. May hide less dominant or recessive genes.
Semi-Dominant - Only requires a single copy of the gene to show, however, a second copy of the same gene gives a different
