Drawing Materials

Journal Entry: Thu Aug 2, 2012, 3:25 AM

Welcome to my article, which I devoted to materials for drawing. Many people often ask me which materials I use for drawing and which I could recommend. I this article I will give you a short review about what I use myself.

First of all, let's speak about pencils. One of the most popular brands for pencils is Check Company Koh-I-Noor Hardtmuth.
There are pencils with various extend of hardness in the range from 9B (which is the softest) to 9H (the hardest). The middle one among them is HB, F. For most drawings I use several pencils with various hardness - 8B, 7B, 2B, HB, 2H, 5H. Pencils 5H should be used carefully because at high pressure on the paper it can form dints.
For very dark colors you can use both usual pencils Koh-I-Noor 8H, and black-chalk pencils.
You can buy pencils as a standard set and as separate sets of certain hardness.
Some drawings require very careful work. For this purposes you can use mechanical pencils. All mechanical pencils can be divided into two types:
Collet type:
It has special clutch, which fixates lead (lead can have two diameters 2 mm or 3,5 mm). If you press the bottom, the clutch opens and lead can be pulled out or pushed in into the pencil.
Automatic type:
A special screw wheel mechanism is built in this pencil, due to which lead can go out and back. All producers of automatic pencils use the system which denotes the thickness of line ISO, which includes four diameters of lead: 1,00mm, 0.70 mm, 0.50 mm, 0.35 mm.
I use automatic pencil made by Koh-I-Noor and Avantre which have diameters 0.7, 0.5, and 0.35. The best refills for these pencils are those made by Faber Castell or other.

Apart from pencils it is very important to choose the right paper. I tried many sorts of paper, but I stopped at photographic paper made by Lomond 160g/m2. Density should be high which prevent the risk that the paper could be dinted when you press the pencil. The paper is matt, one sided, I draw on the opposite side of the sheet.
Many people are interested in the advantage of this paper over others. Photographic paper is very smooth; to achieve an even color on such smooth paper is easier than on the paper for drawings. Photographic paper can be sold both in sold for stationeries and in shops where technical appliances are sold.

Blending Materials
I use various tools for shading rather often. In most cases these are cotton sticks or blending stumps made of pressed paper. They have various diameters. You can sharpen them either by stationery knife or you can use ordinary pencil sharpener.

There are many kinds of erasers, which differ from each other considerably. Earlier I used various pieces of eraser in order to detail different parts of a portrait. Now it is much more convenient to use pencil – eraser made by Faber Castell. The pencil-eraser can be very hard, soft, and two-sided. I use the latter. I also use kneadable eraser. It is like a piece of rubber, which you can knead in various ways and it retains any shape you want.

Apart from pencils I also use some other tools of calligraphy: these are black and white Indian ink, feather, black and white gel pens.
In the end you can use Fixative.

Thank you for attention. I hope my article can help you to choose good materials for you creative work.
