Nurses’ careers are not limited to healthcare facilities and hospitals. They can also venture into community-oriented jobs where they will not be limited to the typical medical settings. One such path is Domestic Violence Nursing.

Domestic violence nurses deal primarily with patients who are victims of domestic violence. Patients could range from children to women and even the elderly.

They are given the task of caring for and treating patients’ wounds while keepi9ng detailed records of the injuries the patient endured because of abuse. Their records are used as evidence at the judicial setting. Aside from treating physical wounds, they also help patients recover from the mental and emotional burdens of experiencing abuse.

Some of the requirements in order to become a domestic violence nurse include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Nursing Diploma or Associate of Science in Nursing. They must then pass the NCLEX-RN. There is also an option to advance into a position as a sexual assault nurse examiner, which requires passing a forensic nursing certification exam.

This is just one of the many options nurses have in order to give back to their communities and to serve humanity in the best way they can.
