I went hiking in the snow a bit ago. It was a fairly warm day, and I was lucky enough to catch some magpies. Magpies are my favorite birds. Okay, the entire corvidae family is awesome. I got into a somewhat-debate the other day with a coworker who called them dumb. Like, do y'all know they are one of the very few nonmammals who are capable of recognizing themselves in a mirror? They hold rituals for their dead, can use tools, and they can remember faces for a year. Meanwhile, I'm over here forgetting people I've been talking to for like a week. Magpies: 1, Kelsi: 0.
In general, magpies, crows, and ravens tend to get a bad rap. In some cultures they are seen as messengers from the otherworld. In Norse mythology, the all-father Odin had two ravens named Huginn and Muninn (named for thought and memory) who sat on his shoulders. In many cultures they are feared and viewed as signs of death. In others, they are connected to prophecy. In general, I think a lot of carrion birds don't get the appreciation they deserve for rebooting the cycle of life.
Anyways, now that I've rambled, here's a picture I sorta liked.
