Process by NukeRooster Process by NukeRooster
Another process thing I did in March of last year, thanks to my patrons on Patreon.   I would have done a few things differently now (more of correcting things that bother me), but maybe this will help some folks out there with darker fur.

Don't be afraid to put a little color into your dark/black fur.  c:  I'm not a teacher, this is just how I work. Ignore grammer/spelling issues.

I will be sure to use this information with my future of game design (and I will use it wisely with the characters for my stories)

Oh, I thought you worked with gray scale, but then at the end of the tutorial, I see that it already has that coat color. .3.
I love how you detail the fur O.o

few short questions: (if you're up to it, if not, it's fine)
* When doing a character as black it is not the best idea to go pure darkness, right? (aside from doing slightly lighter tones, are there any other suggestions?)
* What program did you use?
*which is better, pen (tablet or pad) or mouse?

You did a great job with the tutorial. never could really figure how the process goes. (either took forever with drawings or just gave up half way in frustration)

do you have any recommended brushes?

Ahh thank you for posting this! I have a few characters with black, or near black coat colors and always found it difficult to shade them. Never thought to start with a med-dark color the alleviate this.

This is really helpful, thank you! I always struggle with painting black/very dark fur. Would the same principle apply to white/very pale characters?

Yeah, white fur often reflects colors around it as well, so if a white cat were to sit in an orange room, it would have an orange-based hue.  Instead of starting off with a dark blue like I did here, I'd start of with a lighter, soft blue-gray for cold, and soft gray-yellow or red for warm.  I like starting out desaturated and work my color up, but sometimes it's fun to start off with something more bold and experiment with color.  (:
