Originally described as a species of Poekilopleuron, the analysis of the postcranial remains showed that it was sufficiently different from the other genus to warrant a new name, Dubreuillosaurus honoring the Dubreuil family who discovered the fossil in 1994. This is the megalosaurid with the best preserved skull and it was suggested that along the other members of the family, Dubreuillosaurus valesdunensis was living on a diet of fish. This is consistent with the fact that megalosaurids have always been found in marine and coastal deposits.
