We mostly think these animals were weird because we're not used to seeing them and because they differ much from our current fauna. But they were as adapted to their environment as our current animals are I guess.

Those jaws remind me of a clamp.  I guess that would make Atopodentatus a sea-clamp.

It's a...hammerhead duck? XD Looks like it could be a platypus ancestor.

Not at all... but there is a thing called convergent evolution...

Atopodentatus wasn't a synapsid though.

This is one odd animal; when did this species live?
I'm interested- very interested. I've always loved natural history, so this is right up my alley!

ooooooooowwwwwwwhhhh daaamn.... :( seeing this makes me kinda sad XD one less freaky lizard it seems... not that this snout isn't freaky. it is... just not nearly as freaky as the original reconstruictions would have you believe... :D

on the other hand, i am quite happy i've resisted the original urge to make an origami version of this animal, now i can at least portray it accurately :D

It's interesting;  Atopodentatus ended up being more like an aquatic Nigersaurus equivalent.  I had a feeling the initial interpretation of it's jaws were too strange to be true.  Either way, it's still an odd animal.  Nice job on it!

Yes, the initial interpretation was so mindbogglingly strange that it was hard to believe... :)
