Great Sketch Compilation 2: Years 2014-2018 by Nsio Great Sketch Compilation 2: Years 2014-2018 by Nsio
I have been super busy at work for few months. I've tried to draw some new stuff but I'm either too tired after work or I won't be able to dedicate as much time on just drawing as I would like to.

So I decided to make a new sketch compilation. This compilation covers majority of my drawings from late 2014 to early 2018. Click download for fullsize.

There are some drawings that I haven't uploaded on dA before, mostly because the poses and/or execution felt too clinic or uninteresting. I should roll back to more rough look, most of these sketches capture the feel much better than the finished drawings.

I'm also trying to work on two tutorials, one about fundamentals of 3D forms and one about human figure drawing. Both tutorials are becoming huge and it's difficult to decide how to condense them.

All the gosh darn time I spent loading this big abomination of an image... darn you slow ass net.
my eyes are satisfied. <3
It's really nice to see sketches behind all the finished works and published ones, for me it captures the fact that all these sketches and practice is what has been done by the artist to get to the point they are in now.

Are you going to finish Sayaka in thigh highs? I really like that character and can't wait to see what you have waiting for us!

That pose practice lacks the spirit of my earlier pose practices, it ended up too stiff and lifeless, so I'm not going to finish that one. I'll hopefully get to draw a new one in near future though!

Heh, I recognise some of those. Cool to see what they looked like early on.

Oddly enough I was having a similar conversation about the sketch capturing the feel better than the final piece/losing that energy of the original sketch in the process of neatening up the lines with :icongartastic: a bit back, as it seems to be epidemic to just about everyone you talk to. He made the very good point that a sketch, because it is rough, lets the viewer fill in the gaps, almost as if by doing so we add the energy ourselves. Once it gets cleaned up, the viewer is doing less interpretation on their own, that energy that speaks to them personally is lost so, as an illustrator, we have to work harder to keep that energy there the more cleaned up the picture is.

Loving seeing some of your mechanical work as well. That ship design above the open wheeler is awesome. It's just a little old-school (almost a little late-70s style), and I like that.

Indeed. Imagination fills in the details on drawings that leave some leeway for it. Therefore it's more important to capture the feeling rather than objective realism in art (one reason I haven't prioritized anatomy).

Sometimes when I'm either warming up or want to scribble with abandon, I draw such mechanical stuff. I usually don't know what kind of design emerges from there :D.

The plane thing is so relatable, when you panic to that you might be too late for the plane then you get to sit next to a cute dude......

Thanks for sharing these sketches of your.  Just looking at these alone can be a great teaching tool as you've always had a great sense of both anatomy & dynamism.

Some of these I've seen. Very nice and most of them have a gesture flow which to me makes about 30-40% of the drawing. Otherwise it would end up being dull.

When we draw in 3D, we must thing and treat every element in 3D. So we can help ourselves by coiling up circles in order to build the limb/figure. Or add many circles and cubes, stacked - to show the depth. But at some point it all becomes too messy and you can't figure out what's what anymore. And adding more colors to distinguish elements doesn't help much. What can we do about that? Any ideas?

"most of these sketches capture the feel much better than the finished drawings"

I remember when I went to school, my teacher showed us a comic (spiderman) before being inked, and then after being inked.
I noticed the inked version looked cold, so I asked my teacher: 'Why is that? Why the sketches are so alive while the inked comic looks so cold and metallic?' (The artist was the same).
My teacher told me that is normal, and that nothing can be done to prevent this.

Then, few months ago I ended in a site about comics, and even there there was written that inking a drawing steal life, so poses should be exaggerated compared to the references.

I don't know if is for the same reason they suggest you to not try to trace your sketch line for line, but instead to redraw it, pretending there are no sketch to follow.
Some artists seem to solve this by drawing the structure, then drawing the detail and the features directly by inking. If the structure is right, is easy to put things in place. Put this depends mostly on the personality of the artist.

Yhe latter sketces of the model might be trivial, but I love how you emphatized the flowing lines.

I believe I could make the finished versions more lively if I wanted. For now my lineart is looking too clinic, I need too make it rougher, thicker or something to make it more lively. I'm also slightly rusty, so that may have something to do with it as well.

Did I just see a Sweden flag?

That aside, this is so inspirational! I was about to take a break but damn now I want to finish my artwork LOL
also, I can believe how they are all so detailed! I can totally see all of them turning into finished pieces. Hope I do see some of them in the future if you decide to touch them again!

Originally it was Finland flag, but without colors it can be both :D

I tend to always move forward, so even if I'm not finishing these or uploading the little I have already done, there will be at least some new content coming at some point

It's Robot Girl! Cheap way to make cyborgs - leave the ball-jointed doll look intact instead of cleaning it up :p (Lick)
