Happy Friday Guys! We're kicking off the weekend by introducing the newest NRG superhero and member of the Golden State Garrison- The Spaceman!
ORIGIN
Following Earth’s encounter with the alien tycoon tyrant Magnat and learning about the planet’s status amongst life amongst the stars, mankind soon had a secondary encounter with life from amongst the stars, this one far more benevolent. A eager Telepian dubbing himself “The Spaceman”, he claimed to have been the last of his species and one of the greatest warriors acting as a representative for the Parliament of Planets, sent to Earth on a mission of peace and aid after earth’s heroes has proven themselves capable of repelling Magnat. With his seemingly vast and powerful telekinetic abilities, the Spaceman quickly went to work to bring peace, justice and equality to the planet earth.
Spaceman’s credibility as a galactic superhero quickly came under fire by Earth representatives and their heroes after some severely disastrous attempts at heroism by Spaceman, and backed into a corner by the Golden State Garrison, he was forced to reveal the truth. His true name was Ge’eak, and he was not the last of his species nor the greatest warrior of the Parliament of Planets. Far from it, his people were numerous and acted as paper pushers for the Parliament, of which he was one of these faceless nobodies who felt stuck in a dead-end position and finding solace in pop culture amongst different alien species. Ge’eak had discovered broadcast transmissions of the popular fictional earth superhero Solman and others like him, and inspired by tales of how an alien could be seen as a hero amongst other aliens, Ge’eak left everything behind and ventured to earth to be somebody. Ge’eak was not a warrior however, and he had also not been prepared for how prejudice Earthlings could be towards outsiders, let alone their own kind. Despite his ruse being discovered, the Golden State Garrison - namely Toonman - saw a genuine pure-hearted soul who was just trying to find his purpose in life. And realizing Ge’eak had no place to go and that his knowledge of alien life and cultures could prove useful in protecting earth from future threats, the heroes offered the Spaceman a place on their team to train him to be a genuine superhero like them.
Powers/Abilities:
Spaceman’s species are capable of vast, untapped telekinetic powers. So far he has shown the ability to levitate, move objects, create forcefields and bind others, enhance his conditioning, fire blasts of telekinetic energy, etc.
So, the final conception of Spaceman is a long story. His origins were that he was meant to be an inverted take on alien superhero archetypes like Superman and Martian Manhunter in that unlike them Spaceman would be an alien superhero who could not blend in amongst humans because he did not look human like Superman or was capable of shapeshifting to hide like Martian Manhunter; and therefore would have to face extreme prejudice on Earth despite all the good deeds he does. I kinda was tired of how most alien superhero look human or humanoid, and I wanted something that would obviously be alien in nature like many of the alien species of say Dragonball Z. And in a lot ways Spaceman still encompasses this inverted trope. Originally, however, his origins were supposed to be very similar to Superman's in that he was sent to earth and raised amongst humans, but I realized there would be no way I could do that without retconning the history I've established with NRG already that is Toonman being NRG's first canonical superhero. So, I had to shelve Spaceman and find a new origin for him.
It was only recently while I was brainstorming ideas for new goofy goober members for the Golden State Garrison after the success of Nitro-Jen and Romulus that I was struck with inspiration for a new origin for Spaceman! Essentially I had this idea for what if an alien nobody from outer space had discovered earth culture in comic books and stories like Superman, tales about an alien who's abilities made them a superhero in the eyes of humans, and ultimately decided inspired by Earth culture to become NRG's Superman BUT they wouldn't be prepared for the harsh realities of being a superhero or the extreme prejudice they would face on Earth. So essentially Spaceman is NRG's version of Disney's Pleakley who is this geeky nobody obsessed with Earth pop culture and tries to emulated like a comic book nerd who gains superpowers, only for reality to hit him harder. To me it seemed like a fun way to do an inverted take on the Superman/Martian Manhunter alien superhero trope while still sticking true to my original ideas.
Designing Spaceman with David Velasquez was a lot of fun. We took inspiration from Alien characters like Piccolo and other characters from Dragonball Z as well as Invincible's Allen the Alien to design something that would stick out like a sour thumb compared to Superman. Deciding on Spaceman's powers were a tough one to figure out though. In the end I decided to make him a powerful telekinetic, one of my favorite superpowers, as I felt it would offer him a lot of room to grow and same power levels as Superman and MM.
