Description

It’s a vindication of Islamic legacy. This geometry pattern is from The Real Alcazar in Andalusia. I learnt how to creat it with a ruler, a compass, square and bevel but in the time Arabs really created that wise, sacred mind blowing geometry their only tools were a cord, some kind of pencil & a stick. They discovered maths were in nature in the shape of flowers, stars on starfish, circles in tree trunks, hexagons in beehives, and triangles in plant leaves, vegetables, fruits, animal ears, noses, and teeth etcetera. I guess they realized when there are mathematical patrons everywhere in the planet there’s no doubt there’s a creator. Even though their religion banned to create false idolatry these amazing people found a way to create from what they learned from nature into their mosques. I remember while studying History of Art it was by far my favorite architecture. This geometry always amazed me since it’s everywhere here but as a child I didn’t know its very important meaning. So these artisans creations has what’s called horror-vacuii (fear of emptiness) then they covered it all without a blank space in this patterns. I decided to leave it that simple as a matter of respect. While their mosques or alcazabas for instance were just plain rocks outside, it was full of this magnificent patters in crystals, gems, semiprecious stones, colored ceramic, goldsmith, carved wood pillars or windows, etcetera inside of this kind of buildings. It seems to me very significant that the outside was ugly, humble, plain while the inside was beautiful, rich and intricate. As well as the most spectacular of these geometries by pattern, material and quality were on the roof that made them look at the top enchanted for its meaning and beauty. I decided to make them in rice and then in bamboo paper with less than a centimeter per division as a metaphor of important wonders being ignored or took for granted that they can be ruined. If we don’t pay attention, care about, make introspection, put in others shoes, slow down, recycle, educate: ourselves, people, animals, nature are damaged or destroyed as we are fragile so it’s the world.
