Title: Vast Friday Light
Following the events of the previous chapter, April and her Cyndaquil find themselves at Lake of Bays’ Bondi Village. April carrying their raft with her while Cyndaquil walks in front.
Cyndaquil: Village?? This place looks like a summer camp April.
April: It’s a resort. But never mind that, we need to get to the other side.
Cyndaquil: Why are you carrying the raft with you? It’ll slow us down.
April: Bondi Village is in the middle of the water; we’ve got no other way out of here once we find the way off.
Cyndaquil: You just caught a Pokémon that can swim.
April: Cyndaquil…..
Quagsire’s words repeated: Oh I KNOW what’s in front of me, and I’m going to RAM right into all of it!
Cyndaquil: Bad idea…..Yeah.
(As afternoon gives way to evening, on the other side of Bondi Village, now facing the water again, Cyndaquil lays the raft down right side up as April steps out of the resort’s shop. Bagels and lemonade in hand.)
April: Here you go Cyndaquil, we’ll take off again once we’re done eating.
Cyndaquil: Yum!
(Cyndaquil happily accepts his bagel and drink.)
April: Hey Cyndaquil, do you know about any other of the new Pokémon out there??
(Cyndaquil looks at April as he gulps down his lemonade.)
Cyndaquil: To be honest, I’ve hardly met any other Pokémon. But I’ve got a question too.
April: What’s up??
Cyndaquil: What happened with Quagsire yesterday? He started out as Wooper, and then….
April: He evolved. Pokémon transform into different Pokémon when they gain enough experience points. Well, among other ways. It generally means they become more powerful.
(She eats her bagel.)
April: The two Pokémon that Uncle David let me pick from the day we left home, did you know them personally?
Cyndaquil: Nope. But speaking of which.
April: What?
(Cyndaquil sits down on his bottom.)
Cyndaquil: I wonder how Totodile’s been doing.
April: Yeah….Me too.
David’s word repeated: Cyndaquil’s in good hands, but I’m worried about Totodile. They say a Pokémon raised by a bad person becomes bad itself.
Cyndaquil: April, what’s your family like??
April: Huh??
Cyndaquil: I hatched alone; I don’t remember my parents. Anything about my past. What about your family? Your Uncle treated me nice, but you don’t talk a lot about the rest of your family. I mean, sometimes you mention your mother, but….
(April puts her bagel down.)
April: That’s because Mom’s the only other family member I have….
Cyndaquil: What do you mean??
(April shuts her eyes.)
Cyndaquil:…..
(A Super Nerd, laying on the beach nearby, sits up straight as a Fat Guy reaches the shore on his motorboat.)
Fat Guy: For the third time! Absolutely nothing! I keep hearing the sounds when I get far enough out there, but it’s coming from multiple directions. In any case I still didn’t see it.
Super Nerd: This is getting annoying. I really don’t feel like sitting around for another week. But we’re not giving up on finding the Hidden Mist Pokémon!
Fat Guy: Well if you want to switch be my guest! It’s late and I’m hungry!
Super Nerd: Look, I’ll go buy us something from Domino’s. Then we’re going out there together. And this time we’re keeping the motor off. That’s probably what’s killing you out there!
Fat Guy: Fine.
(They park the boat and leave.)
Cyndaquil: What….Was that??
April: Hidden what??
(April looks at her Phone.)
Cyndaquil: What is it??
April: Here! Since the first day of the year something’s been heard throughout the waters of off Bondi Village. But only on Fridays….
Cyndaquil: What exactly is this thing??
April: Good question. It says whoever’s gotten close enough to the noise it finds themselves surrounded by fog that just appears out of nowhere.
Cyndaquil: Sounds like it’s TRYING to hide from everyone.
April: Yeah. But so far that’s it. No attacks, no aggressive reaction at all. Whatever it is all it’s doing is avoiding people. But the local wild Pokémon avoid the sounds it makes.
Cyndaquil: Are you thinking what I am April??
April: Exactly. Come on Cyndaquil? We’re finding this thing!
Cyndaquil: Yay!
(April and Cyndaquil find themselves back on the water, looking around themselves.)
April: So far so…..Boring.
Cyndaquil: Nothing unusual yet. Except….
April: Except what??
Cyndaquil: The water in this part of the lake, it smells different than where we were earlier today.
April: Do you think we should follow that scent?
Cyndaquil: I think it’s worth a shot.
(April slowly paddles the oar in the direction Cyndaquil’s nose faces.)
Cyndaquil: Yeah, whatever that is it’s getting stronger in this direction.
April: So we know what we’re doing then. Okay, this thing’s obviously a Water Pokémon. So Cyndaquil…I’m telling you right now-
(A loud whale noise is suddenly heard. Both of them fall backward onto the raft.)
Cyndaquil: What was that??
(He thrusts himself back up, looking around confused.)
April: Okay here we go!
(She gets back up and begins moving the oar again, drifting straight ahead. Only to be suddenly pushed back by the water current.)
Cyndaquil: Hey!
April: Alright, it’s up ahead. I know it.
Cyndaquil: Tell me something I don’t know!
(April thrusts the oar into the water while it’s still rocking, continuing their path. Suddenly encountering a dense fog.)
April: Here we go Cyndaquil.
Cyndaquil: Yeah.
(A large mass is soon visible beyond the fog.)
April: Wait for it.
(She holds her hand behind her to face Cyndaquil. Counting down silently with her fingers.)
Cyndaquil: Bring it on!
(Cyndaquil jumps forth, dispelling the fog. Landing on a purple rock sticking out of the water.)
April: Oh come on!
Cyndaquil: Wha-. But it wasn’t here until…..The fog…..
April: Just get back to the raft.
(Cyndaquil hops back over.)
April: This thing’s real smart, we need to be more careful.
Cyndaquil: Okay April.
(They drift elsewhere. Just as a flipper lifts up from under the rock and it submerges back under the water. A human foot comes down on a nearby cliff. Someone else saw it!)
April: Well now the good news is we know what to look for. The bad news though….
Cyndaquil: It knows we’re looking. This thing is too smart for us.
April: Don’t be that way. We’ll find it before sunrise.
Cyndaquil: I hope so.
(Another strong tremor is sent through the water.)
Cyndaquil: !!
(He falls backward again.)
April: What now??
(She rows forth, coming up to the motorboat from earlier snapped in half. Its various parts floating and then sinking into the water.)
Cyndaquil: This is….
April: The boat those guys from earlier used….
(The Fat Guy suddenly rises from the water. His Super Nerd friend sitting on him as he floats there.)
Fat Guy: I didn’t appreciate you dragging me out here for this futile goose chase. And I really don’t condone what you’re doing now!
Super Nerd: Just be quiet!
April: What…..What happened to you guys?
Super Nerd: What does it look like?! Something pulled us under and wrecked our boat while it was capsized!
Fat Guy: Your Dad’s boat! Need I remind you.
Super Nerd: I said be quiet dude.
April: Did you see where it went?
Super Nerd: What do you care?
Cyndaquil: We’re out here for the same reason as you guys! To catch the…..
April: Hidden Mist Pokémon.
Fat Guy: For the love of all that’s deep fried….Look at what’s left of our motorboat! You two just have a raft.
(Something approaches them from under the water.)
April: We’ll be happy to help you guys back to shore in the meantime.
Super Nerd: Look, as much as I love socializing with idiots, we wouldn’t even fit in that mattress you have there. We’re going back on our own.
Fat Guy: Idiots huh? Look who’s talking.
Super Nerd: Just shut up!
(The Pokémon below them fires Poison Sting at the Fat Guy’s posterior.)
Fat Guy: No! Listen to me! Unlike you, at those guys are smarter than-…..MY ASS!!
(He instantly flies five feet out of the water. Creating a large splash as he comes back down, forcing April and Cyndaquil’s raft far down the water.)
April: Hang on Cyndaquil!
(Cyndaquil holds fast to April’s head. The two of them breathing hard as the water settles again.)
April: Are you alright buddy??
Cyndaquil: I think….What about you??
April: I’m fine.
(She takes some Pop Tarts out of her backpack.)
April: Here, have some food. I have a feeling we’re about to find what we’re looking for.
Cyndaquil: Yeah, me too.
April: What??
Cyndaquil: That scent’s back.
(Cyndaquil looks down.)
Cyndaquil: And it’s coming from under us this time.
(The loud noise is heard again.)
April: Alright! Here we go!
(A Tentacool rises from the water behind them. Firing Poison Sting at the water in front.)
April: What the?!?
(The large Pokémon rises from the water, overshadowing Tentacool before Body Slamming it. Causing the water to rain down in front of it. April covering Cyndaquil with her body. Then looking up.)
April: That’s….
(The Tentacool floats back up, paralyzed in the water. Right next to the mighty Lapras. Looking at the Jellyfish Pokémon before turning its attention to the water beyond.)
April’s Pokédex: Lapras. The Transport Pokémon. This very gentle and very intelligent Pokémon is well known for giving rides to humans. Over the years this species has become very rare in the wild.
Cyndaquil: Gentle?? That wasn’t gentle??
(Lapras turns back to them.)
Lapras: Well nobody’s treated me that way so far.
(Tentacool disappears from the water as its returned to its Poké Ball.)
Lapras: ?!?
Duncan: Earthquake!
(Duncan’s Totodile emerges from the water, hitting Lapras head on. Forcefully pushing the Transport Pokémon, along with April and Cyndaquil, right onto land.)
Cyndaquil: Ow!!
April: Lapras!!
(Lapras groans, painfully lifting his neck up. Opening his eyes in time for Totodile to step onto shore. Duncan soon doing the same.)
April: I should’ve known.
Duncan: Now Rock Smash!
(Totodile jumps high and slams Lapras in the shell.)
Duncan: Great going! Poké Ball! Go!
April: !!
(Duncan tosses his Poké Ball! Which hits and absorbs Lapras. Blinking on the ground.)
Duncan:……
(The Poké Ball breaks open, Lapras roars angrily.)
Duncan: Tough guy huh?? Two can play at that game! Totodile, Surf!
(Cyndaquil rams Totodile before he can react, pushing him right into Duncan.)
April: Leave Lapras alone you jerk!
Cyndaquil: Yeah!
(Duncan immediately drags himself up.)
Duncan: Oh please! We came out here for the same thing didn’t we? Unlike you I’m not stupid!
April: Unlike YOU I’m not hurting anyone!
Duncan: So you seriously expect to catch strong Pokémon without attacking them? Geez, I thought even YOU were smarter than that.
(April clenches her fist, then points at Totodile.)
April: Hey Totodile! Duncan STOLE you! You know that right?? He broke into my uncle’s home and took you by force! Why would you want to be on his side?!?
(Totodile rears his front teeth.)
Totodile: Heh. You truly are as stupid as I thought!
April: Come again??
Totodile: Who gave you guys the right to tell me how to live in the first place?? You were just going to leave me to rot in your boring hometown. You didn’t even choose me for your awesome adventure, but Duncan did! He cares about me and you don’t. And thanks to him I’ve gotten stronger! MUCH stronger than Cyndaquil!
(Totodile smiles like a crocodile.)
Totodile: So allow me to prove that right now!
(Totodile Headbutts Cyndaquil right into April.)
Lapras: !!
(April and Cyndaquil stand up.)
Duncan: I’ll only say this once. Back off and go away.
April: Cyndaquil. Smokescreen!
Duncan: Totodile! Finish them off!
(Lapras soundly uses Sing. Putting both Pokémon to sleep.)
April/Duncan: What?!?
(Lapras continues with Mist. Covering the entire shoreline.)
Duncan: No!!
(Elsewhere, Lapras carries and April and Cyndaquil back on the water. Cyndaquil soon wakes up.)
Cyndaquil: Where are we??
Lapras: Away from there. We had to escape.
April: Thank you…..
Lapras: I don’t know your history with that other Trainer, but even I was frightened of him. To stand up to someone like that, you’re very brave.
Cyndaquil: You don’t know the half of it. If we didn’t stand up to him you would’ve suffered.
April: Yeah, to be honest we came out here because we heard about you popping up in this area. But we couldn’t let Duncan get ahold of you.
Lapras: I see….
(Lapras reaches the edge of the water.)
Lapras: I thank you for your kindness. Since you’re curious about me, I made this place my home because of how peaceful it was compared to my life of traveling the Canadian waters. Until the human settlements were built and guys like that came after me.
(April looks down. Picking up Cyndaquil as she steps onto shore.)
Lapras: Up to this point I’ve been able to avoid the humans here, but now….
Cyndaquil: Now that Duncan’s seen you, word’s going to get out about your existence. And….
Lapras: That won’t be a problem now. I’ll move on with you two.
April: What??
Lapras: You and your Pokémon have displayed the greatest kindness I’ve seen in my time here. Now that I must leave this place, there’s only one path I want for myself. If you wish it, I humbly ask to join you on your journey.
April: Are you sure about that??
Lapras: Yes. Tell me, what is your name?
April: I’m April.
Lapras: April. You told me you came to find me because of how much attention I drew. But I’m sincerely happy to have found a Trainer like you in this vast world. It is I who has found what I was looking for tonight.
Cyndaquil: Well then. Welcome to the team!
April: Yeah. Welcome Lapras.
(April takes out her Poké Ball. Tossing it as Lapras bounces it off his snout. Entering the Poké Ball as it flies into the moonlight and lands back in April’s hand. Lapras is caught!)
Cyndaquil: Yay! We caught the Hidden Mist Pokémon!
April: No Cyndaquil. Lapras isn’t hidden anymore.
(Lapras’s Poké Ball disappears from April’s hand.)
Cyndaquil: Huh?!? Where’d our new friend go?!?
April: Oh yeah…..Right…..
To Be Continued.
