We were tasked to recreate a classic painting and put it in a modern setting. After searching for classic paintings for a while I spotted Quentin Matsys' The Ugly Duchess (alt. An Old Woman) and found it interesting because of how different it was from other pieces from the Renaissance. Looking into different theories about its symbolic meaning, I found one saying that it meant to satirize old women looking to be young again. This resonated with me because of my hatred for cosmetic plastic surgery and body transformations. I looked up the most hideous, botoxed hags I could find and photobashed a sort of mish-mash reference that matched the original painting and started painting the final product off it.
Any resemblance to actual people, plastic bags and/or monsters, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
