Digital Drawing Tutorial by nortagem Digital Drawing Tutorial by nortagem
This is a digital drawing tutorial for beginners.
I've recently discovered myself how to use a graphic tablet
to achieve high-level artworks, and would like to share that
knowledge with you.

This tutorial is designed for those who know how to
draw traditionally.
There's no 'magic trick' here, I'm
just giving you the tools that will allow you to use your
drawing abilities with a computer, which I think has many
new possibilities for an artist.

Full view to watch this tutorial.

The second part of this tutorial, Digital Painting, can be found here

Thanks for the DD!
I'd like to thank everyone for their :+fav:'s and lovely comments. It's awesome!

And I truly hope this tutorial will indeed help you become a digital artist!

Suggester's words: Digital Drawing Tutorial by ~nortagem looks very detailed and really helpful. I'm not a digital artist myself, but this really motivates me to start using my tablet some more! ( Suggested by Anoya and Featured by FantasyStock )

How do you fill in colours on linearts/sketches?

I'm thinking about purchasing a digital drawing pad for myself. Do you have any recommendations?

Building up a good color pallet seems to be the key to shading the drawing. Did you sample the colors from the image itself or did you sample it from the already existing color pallet and expand it that way? My biggest problem with giving my drawings a plastic look is my inability to creating a good color gradient/color pallet, so I would really appreciate a short instruction on how to build up the color range. Also, that fur seems to be a lot of work ;_;

In step 8, how do you get the sampled colors? Do you leave it off the the side, or on a blank patch? I'm sorry if I'm bothering you, but I'm completely new at this and I really want to try digital artwork. Again, sorry if I'm bothering you about this! Sweating a little...

Hey, to sample any color on stage, just make sure the brush tool is selected and hold the ALT key down. You should see the mouse cursor change into the Eyedropper tool. Alternatively, you can hit the 'I' key to directly select the Eyedropper tool.
Now, with the eyedropper tool selected, click anywhere on stage to sample that color. That's it!
Also, you can click the foreground color selector and choose a color manually.
If you want, you can also create custom color swatches to be used throughout your work. Here's a tutorial to do so:

K, my brush window doesn't show my brush (in the brush preview) as a squiggly line with a pointy end like in step 5. It looks like a squiggly with a round end. Is it the driver for my tablet or the settings in photoshop? I don't have the CD for the tablet with me, I just plugged it into the usb port. I went to the brush window, then shape dynamics, then I used the pen pressure setting. There's a triangle caution sign on it. I have PS CS2. Help please?

I took a shoot at this tutorial yesterday, and it was really helpful. Kinda amazed it has taken me this long to start using the color picker. This type of exercise is just what I need in order to improve how I draw and percieve values. Kudos to you man!

is there multiple kinds of photoshop? cause I always thought it was just for editing pictures, not drawing...
also, is it free download? if so can you send me a link to the type you use?
thanks a billion!
nortagem Featured By Owner Nov 30, 2011
Adobe Photoshop is a graphics editing program, that can pretty much do anything to an image, whether it's editing, creating from scratch, or drawing\painting.
It's not free, but Adobe will let you tryout their products for 30 days free of charge:

Good luck :)
