Shutoff: A shutdown/logoff util for Windows-a nookian app

---------------------------------------------------------------

Last update March 27, 2009 to version 1.6

New: now one can change skin using right click (see the change log below).

---------------------------------------------------------------

What?

Shutoff is logoff/shutdown app for Windows (XP, Vista, Windows 7)

Features:

- screen dimming
- buttons fade in/out
- skinnable (and dead easy)
- png support (e.g. shadow box, transparency etc...)
- fully customizable dialog, any shape and size, can be placed anywhere
- fully customizable buttons, any shape and size, can be placed anywhere
- unzip and run, no installation, small size (~300K)
- ergonomics: click anywhere (except buttons) to close

Installation: Just unzip the package to your folder of choice.

Usage: Shutoff is best used as a dock item. If you don't use docks, you can create a short cut for shutoff on the quick launch toolbar in the taskbar so you have quick access to shutdown/logoff (without pulling down the startmenu). Or just create a short cut for shutoff on desktop.

keyboard: Escape to close the util.
mouse: click anywhere except the buttons to close.

The functionality of the buttons in the default skin are logoff, reboot, shutdown, respectively. Logoff, reboot, and shutdown in the default skin are forced (i.e. it will logoff after few seconds even if some programs do not response to close request) but you can change to non-forced action (e.g., not logoff if there are non-saved work etc....). Just look into the settings.ini in the skin folder and change the action number there.

Skinning:

A skin is in a subfolder of the skins directory where you put shutoff.exe. Skin selection is done by setting skin=<skin-name> in the file shutoff.ini, which resides in the same folder as where you put shutoff.exe.

For skinning, just look at the sample default skin. It is pretty self-explanatory in the setting.ini file so pls look at a sample settings.ini and the explanation there for how to make skins for shutoff. Basically, all you have to do is to provide button images and dialog background and tell the program where to display them.

Happy skinning! (use shutoff tag/keyword in submission)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This is the homepage of shutoff. Future version will be released here. If you release a skin, it is suggested to link to this page instead of distributing the program to ensure access to the latest version of shutoff.

- arbitrary number of buttons
- add suspend/hibernate action
- program name change to shutoff

Update: 11/08/08

- now with fade in and fade out dialog box !
- click anywhere except the buttons to cancel/close

Update: 11/09/08

- added OffsetX and OffsetY in settings.ini. Can set these to auto to center the dialog automatically for different screen resolutions
- added sound option when open

Update: 12/05/08
- added glass effect
- added button fade in/out
- code optimization (smoother dimming)

Update: 12/10/08
-minor bug fixed

Update: 12/18/08
-minor bugs in suspend/hibernate fixed
-now accept skin name as parameter. For example, "shutoff.exe Leaf" will load the skin leaf. Skin names must not have space in them. This feature allows quick changing skins without editing shutoff.ini.

Update: 01/02/09
-add user profile support: to use user skin setting instead of global skin setting in the file shutoff.ini where you place shutoff.exe, place a personalized shutoff.ini file (copy from the folder where you place shutoff.exe) in the directory %ApplicationData%\shutoff\, where %ApplicationData% is the actual path to user application data folder (you have to create the subfolder shutoff as well).

In XP, the default Application Data folder is "c:\documents and settings\Username\Application Data", where username is your user name. The folder is hidden by default so you have to type in the path in the address bar.

For example, for the username JeffV, a user profile for shutoff is the shutoff.ini file in the folder "c:\documents and settings\JeffV\Application Data\shutoff"

This user profile is useful if you have multiple accounts like I do.

Update: 01/12/09
-no change in version; added standby button images and empty button template images

Update: 03/27/09
-right click on shutoff dialog window will bring up the list of installed skins (which are the subfolders of the skins directory, where you put shutoff). Select a skin from the list to change skin.
-you can also call up editor to edit the config file for the current skin from the right lick menu. Change in the config file will be effective on the next shutoff launch.

Latest version: 1.6

(Version is in the readme.txt file in the zip file. If you use an older version, download the newest one here.)

Love the app bro. Few questions tho:
1. Is it possible to change the Windows "Shutdown button" in the Start menu to trigger your shutdown program instead?

Also, I can't make a keyboard shortcut for this app.

I made a shortcut of the program, go to properties and tried several shortcut key combinations,
Alt+F5, Ctrl+Shift+S, Alt+S, etc...

I've done many other programs like this, and even tried doing Notepad, which did fine. Any idea as to why it won't launch
with a keyboard shortcut?
And anything I can do to fix this? I really don't like having an extra icon on the desktop or my taskbar.

Appreciate your work man, keep it up!

Let me know about those questions, thanks

Great work... I am in love with this tiny tool :D
I have posted a screenshot of my desktop here, featuring Shutoff.

Btw, one bug I am experiencing. It always starts with the default skin. If I change the skin it doesnt memorize it and next time again starts with the default. Any solution?

This would be great if it popped up instead of the XP crap when I press my laptops power button, otherwise pretty useless app. :(
