Fragile Composure

Gracie sat across from her sister, doing her best not to look as anxious as she felt. Donna's new apartment was a modest two-bedroom unit, paid for thanks to a generous donation courtesy of her mother.
“So right now I'm waiting on my lawyer before I can start settling Dan's estate. Since he's a missing person, there's apparently a process I have to go through?” Donna's smile was thin and worn, accented by the tired bags under her eyes from many nights without sleep.
Gracie fidgeted with the locket around her neck, looking up from her lap to offer her sister a genuine smile. “Can't Sarah help?”
Donna shook her head and took a drink from her nearly empty wine glass. “No, although she has offered me advice? She's in criminal law, not family law. Heh, unless they try to blame his disappearance on me…she won't be of much use.” Donna tried to laugh, but it was strained and tired.
From the kitchen, Francine could be heard closing cupboards and
