My Bio
i've been a metalsmith since the early 1990's with a background as a machinist. my work reflects the time i spent in the machine shop and has an industrial feel to it. most of the pieces i create are made from stainless steel or titanium. while i have the training to work in the more traditional jewelry materials such as silver or gold, i have put the torch and solder away for a while to focus on the machines i enjoy using as a machinist.

what would you like to use it for?

it's only unsafe if you don't know what you're doing.  you need to use the right metals and the right stones, among other things.  precious metals typically aren't strong enough, and when they are used, they are either special alloys that aren't available to buy (look up steven kretchmer), or are incredibly thick rings (like the original tension set rings by frederick becker [my personal jewelry idol] that he did for niessing).

i only use 6al-4v titanium or stainless steel to do tension settings.  my measurements are down to .001".  i try to only use stones that are no less than 7 mohs, and that also depends on the size of the stone.

i've done false tension settings with a hidden bar under the stone, but only at the request of the customer.  in 25 years of doing this, i've only had 3 stones come out.  once when i first started and didn't use enough tension, once when i used a stone that was too soft, and once when the ring was abused (thrown at a wall in anger).  the first two i consider part of the learning curve (since nobody taught me how to do a tension setting).

i've seen or heard of stones falling out of just about every type of setting.  nothing is 100%.

it depends on how much stock was left on the palm side for stainless steel.  titanium would be able to have more stock removed, but not too much.

thanks!  unfortunately, the borosilicate glass test tubes i have aren't strong enough for a ring.

i've made a few rings with bearings in them.  here's one example: noformdesign.deviantart.com/ar…
